I think this girl should be applauded for the stand that she took, all she wanted was the right to dress smartly and modestly at school, albeit she used the words of the Koran in her favour and perhaps not as they were intented to be interpreted. I was wondering if the story would have been treated differently by the press if she had been a white schoolgirl campaigning for the right to wear a mini-skirt to school, without the religious implications, I think not.

Fair comment, I just thought that these days women are free to dress in pretty much any way they wish, no matter how provocative that may be, it is a shame that a young woman who wanted to dress in the most modest way imaginable was not afforded the freedom to do so. I do understand that schools set a dress code, but surely that is more to ensure that a minimum standard is met and the kids don't turn up looking like they have escaped from a tarts and vicars party. What would the schools' stance have been if the lads decided to turn up in suits, which is surely the smartest way a man can dress.

I understand what you are saying but have a different take on this. Had she won, how many other young girls/women would then have been in a position whereby they where effectively forced to dress in such a conservative way. There were a large number of girls in that school who did not want the dress code changed to suit that girl as they then would have faced pressure to dress the same way as a social norm would have been altered. Had she won, those girls rights would have been compromised.

I remember the original case and the girl came accross as a smirking little shit stirer who seemed very pleased to upset the apple cart at a school that had gone out of its way to be accomodating. How about if CofE or Catholic schools insisted that there should be no mixed fabrics in uniforms as Leviticus tells us? Not very practical or worthwhile.

I am glad most people in England arent like you, it would be like Nazi Germany (albeit more geeky).

One of the great things about this country, and in particular London, is the mix of cultures we have. Its a shame you cant see that.

Chip, I see your point, I take it that you mean girls from the muslim faith being forced to dress as modestly as she did, their parents telling them that if it is good enough for one girl then they should abide by the standards she has set. I cannot see non-muslim parents making their children go to school dressed like that.

A comment I made on here when this originally blew up was that surely the schools should respect the wishes of children from differing faiths to wear their traditional dress (jilbab, headscarf, turban, skull-cap) but insist that they are worn in school colours. This would help members of communities who are so often criticised for being outside mainstream British culture to integrate without losing their own identity.

I also agree with enigma, multi-culturalism is something to be cherished, I would far rather live in a country with than without it.
