Anyone remember the crazy world of Arthur Brown ?

Seen him. Twice. Canterbury festival about 15 years ago (with a string quartet) and at the Southbank around 12 years ago (with an amazing gang of East European musicians). Yes, he did Fire both times. Flaming hat, the lot. The version with the string quartet was the better version, simply for the '**** me' factor :lolol:

Claimed to have arrived on earth from Saturn, thought to have released 300 plus recordings, spent years in New York living communally with his big band rehearsing and playing constantly to save money on rent. The legend known as Sun Ra.

Diamanda Galas. Voice of an angel, so they say. Met her backstage at a concert in Manchester once. Seriously intimidating woman.

Mark E Smith. Definitely A Genius.

Richard D James, Bjork and KLF are very high in the bonkers-genuis scores.

Saw him at the Ash Tree pub in Gillingham once. Would have been in the Seventies sometime. He never set fire to his helmet, as it were, tho for Fire he did have a chain with a wire cage on the end full of flammable material which he duly lit and started swinging around. Tho he clearly hadn't taken account of the dimensions of the Ash Tree's cramped stage as he managed to clout his guitarist on the back of the head with his swinging ball of fire, setting his hair ablaze. Chaos ensued

There are so many, that I can't pick three favourites, but here are three worth investigating.

As Tom Waits has had a mention, here's another absolute one-off putting his unique spin on 'The Heart of Saturday Night'

R. Stevie's worth a mention. This is as near to commercial as he ever got in decades of making cassettes in his house. I heard it on Peel years ago and the internet has allowed me occasional trips down the rabbit hole that is his massive, eclectic back catalogue.

And thirdly Tim Smith of Cardiacs. I hated them and was a bit scared when I first heard this. I'm starting to now understand how great they are:
