RIP Murray.

His voice was synonymous with F1 when I was growing up, and I remember his emotion when Damon Hill crossed the line to win the World Title.

A sad day.
Yes, I remember, that was one of the few moments when his emotions overcame his professionlism.

Him and James Hunt were the perfect combination as commentators. One excitingly mad, the other technically in the know how.
Hunt sadly died quite young RIP
But, what a life James Hunt lived [emoji106]

"The lead car is unique, except for the one behind it which is identical."

"I don't make mistakes. I make prophecies which immediately turn out to be wrong."

"There's nothing wrong with the car except that it's on fire."

"And now, excuse me while I interrupt myself."

"And that just shows you how important the car is in Formula One Racing."

"Either the car is stationary, or it's on the move."

"That's history. I say history because it happened in the past."

I loved his genuine enthusiasm for Motorsport.
I got the impression he would do the job for free,he just loved the sport and loved commentating on it and his excitement was really infectious.
And his gaffes made him all the more likeable.
Best ones I remember was touching mansells bump and saying Barry sheen was "waving"as he overtook someone.brilliant.
RIP Murray and thanks for being such a big part of the sport and making it even more enjoyable to watch.

I met him once at Brands Hatch British Superbikes, he was the guest of Rizla Suzuki, I was with Airwaves Ducati but we piled into their hospitality.
Talk about having time for everyone, a gentleman and a real enthusiast, but not quite all there.
He actually prefered and started his career with bikes but anything that had wheels and raced had a massive passion for.

So sad to hear, a great great commentator and so enthusiastic, when he worked with James Hunt I really felt that that was the absolute pinnacle.

F1 was never the same to watch after James's death, and went downhill when Murray retired.

A sad, sad day!

He once dialled my parents number by mistake and got their ansaphone, ignored their message then used up the whole tape telling 'Susan' about his travel requirements for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The word legend is often over-used to describe some people.

But in the case of Murray Walker, he was a genuine and absolute total legend - his knowledge of motorsport, not just F1, but motorcycles and rallying too, was super-impressive.
His commentating style made his work all the more listenable to and his eccentric misquotes of double-dutch made him a real shining jewel.
I'll raise a glass to him tonight.

RIP Mr Excitable.

Very sad news. One of the top sports commentators of all time. RIP.
On a lighter note, hopefully not too irreverent, I recall someone telling me an apparently true story about the Chris Tarrant radio show many many years ago. His radio show had a quiz and Chris asked a female contestant the name of a famous motor racing commentator. She was struggling and she asked for a clue, so he said “ think of something you’d put in your mouth and suck” ( meaning Murray mint as the clue for Murray Walker). Her response was “is it Dickie Davis?”.

Right Here, Right Now
Just heard this on the radio whilst coming home from work. He made a Grand Prix a very watchable and informative occasion and I could not believe it has been 20 years since he retired!! Boy those years have zoomed by (sorry Murray).
R.I.P sir.
