apparently we have a young lad called Jake Caskey, been the England captain already I believe and scored at international level, all be it only 17 or 18....
,
We need to keep him out of the first team until he has signed a pro contract, which he may have done already, but I am not sure about, as we dont want another Gareth Barry situation whereby we lost loads of money by him going to a Prem club cheaply.

What is Jeremie Aliadiere doing now as he was out of contract and not with a club.

What we need is a Lee Hughes type goal poacher not him because of his history etc but a player who plays like him and can poach goals.

Did Gareth Barry play in out first team?
Didn't he go for £1m? (I know we took a discount to get payments early, but in theory we were due £1m for him, at that stage in his career that is a lot of money)
Caskey played in the first team last season

and according to
Caskey gets England call-up From The Argus)
"Caskey decided to stay with Albion, despite interest from Arsenal and Aston Villa. His scholarship deal will turn into a two-year professional contract on his 17th birthday."

No GB did not but to any observers of football who had seen him play it w3as obvious he would be a good player and would make the grade.

I dont think that we got anywhere near the £1m that was originally suggested, I thought that I read it was nearer £500k and that was for him and Michael Standing, who didnt make the grade.

Caskey will eventually go to a big club for a very large sum and we must make sure that it is going to come to us and not sell him off cheaply for somebody else to make a fortune as happened with GB..

"Brighton were fighting for survival and would eventually lose their stadium, the Goldstone Ground. 'I went to the tribunal,' Rogers remember. 'If both of them had won England caps the deal would have been worth £2.4million. But the club settled for £1.4m - vital cash.'"

Interview: Gareth Barry | Football | The Observer

That's what I meant by us taking a discount. We could have been in for over a million for him, but our desperate situation meant we took less because we'd get it sooner. My point being, we weren't short changed by him going to a premier league club, we were due more, but our situation required we took less because we needed it sooner.

I believe one of Villa's arguments was that we had shown no intention of bringing barry through (wouldn't even recognise if he was stood on brighton beach with a seagull on his head) so we shouldn't get as much (or anything) for him. Since we've already used Caskey in the league, we are showing an intent to bring him through so will be able to argue he is worth more to us than if we could if refuse to play him.

f***ing hell we are hardly a one man team. Maybe Sandaza will step up to the plate, Barnes seems to find chance after chance so he will score goals.
WW for some reason having a stab at Gus (attention seeking, fishing, whatever) and some people agreeing with him! We are still top of the league ffs. If we need it Gus will probably delve into the loan market.

That may be correct but I was fairly certain that we settled for a lot less because we needed the money. Didnt think it was as much as £1.4m I thought that that was the original figure not £2.4m as you have suggested but I could have the wrong end of the stick. I tremember the argument that Villa put up about us using him, so you are right about JC having already played for the first team but that doesnt mean that we have to play him now, but just keep him in the squad to show our intention, and keep him involved and happy.

I just love these doom and gloom merchants, and armchair managers who slag off Gus at every possible turn.

FFS we are top of the league, we have other options if Murray is injured and I for one trust Gus to sort it out, whatever happens.

Some of you folks need to relax a little :)

Everything will be ok. The goals are being spread throughout the team and Gus will use his numerous contacts to bring in a quality striker.

No we're really not. He hasn't been as good as he should've been this season so far, he's done well but to say we are f***ed is stupid.

Really?
I think Murray has been class this season, won everything in the air, scored goals (a cracking one yesterday) and dramatically improves Barnes' game.
Barnes looks ALOT better when he's alongside Murray, and Sandaza is clearly not 100% fit yet. I can't see us keeping up this form Without Murray

Whilst it would be a shame for him if he is out for any period of time, I think we will either revert to 4-5-1 or play Bennett up front just off of Barnes. He is playing down the middle anyway.

Why are we panicking when there's no news good or bad on the extent of Murrays injury?

I worry if Murray gets injured especially as we've not scored more than two goals in league and cup this season. Hope Sandaza can step up to the plate but if not why not stick Bennet up front if Murray does miss a game or two ?

I'm stunned that there are STILL people out there who think Barnes can play up front alone. Jesus...... have you ever actually seen him in that role?!?!?!?

Murray is arguably our most important player, but if he is only out for a short period I believe that playing two up front; from a pick of Barnes, Sandaza, (a recalled???) Holroyd, Baz and the Norwegian will do okay, especially as we are defending so well at the moment.

Hope he's not out for long though.
