MPs -v- Journalists Football Match, Withdean, 9.30am, Sunday 26 Sep - All welcome!

Kicking off the Labour Party Conference ...

The annual football match between Labour MPs and Fleet Street's Finest.

Kick-off is at 9.30am on Sunday. The venue is England's 92nd best league football ground.

The message should be obvious.

Albion fans are very welcome to attend. There's plenty of parking at the ground and the facilities are second to ... well, almost any other stadium you can think of.

This is a charity match, with funds raised going to a Cystic Fibrosis charity.

After the final whistle, there will be a second match between two sides of women conference delegates.

Get into the mood for Monday's march with a morning out at Withdean!

As you say, that has some very obvious news potential. Not one of the Labour MPs taking part should be allowed to leave without some comment on Falmer, and even the hacks might include it in colour pieces on the conference.

What do you reckon on the countryside alliance showing up for this event. MPs, press, police, protesters and some foxes in the wildlife haven behind the South Stand = total mayhem.

I would have thought that a mixture of journalists and politicians was enough of a recipe for mayhem, without inviting the rest of that lot.

The journalists won 4-2.

One of the MP's (not sure which one) saw me wearing the stripes and wished us luck with the stadium

Paul Samrah was excellent with his commentary eg 'Could Dan Harding (our England Under 21 International player) please report to the Portacabin'
'There is a Jag blocking the entrance to Withdean' 2 mins later 'There is another Jag blocking the car park'
'Whoever owns these two Jags please don't upset the residents of Withdean as we have to comply with such strict conditions to play here.

I saw Lawrie McMenemy at the match and got him to sign my poster for Falmer. He reckons we will get it.

The female journalists played the female MPs in a 5 a side match after.
They were called Blairs Babes v Sun Stunners.
At this point Tom Hark perked up and took a great deal more notice.
When he realised that the Sun Stunners were, in fact, journalists and not models, he could barely hold back the tears.
Again the journalists won.

Dick Knight took great interest in the ladies' game.
