Normally when a personality has pegged it I'm the first to make a quip, but Mowlam deserves respect for what she's helped to achieve in Northern Ireland, especially as she's on the way out at a relatively young age.

Shame on you Looney.

great to see that a thread regarding the imminent death of a public figure (whether the post was good natured or not) has turned into another NSC in-fight session.
Blame looney for acting like a f***ing tool.

Seeing I wont speak ill of her once shes gone I'll have my say now.

She was overated and incompetant, hence her removal for "not being on top of her breif". still the bbc seems to like her, no suprises there then.

Having to get to get two utterly polarised sections of society with little in common apart from a shared history of dispute, hatred, mistrust and antagonism towards each other round the table to talk about their future was obviously a WELL over-rated act. It would have been sheer incompetence to not have achieved that. It's a piece of piss being Northern Ireland Secretary these days.

We talked last week about Robin Cook and being principled in his actions and beliefs. One could easily mention that quality in Mo Mowlam as well.

Way out west
Mo Mowlam is a rare anomaly as a politician, respected by all parties and with an innate ability to act as an intermediary between warring factions. What she achieved in Northern Ireland in keeping the peace process on track was nothing short of miraculous, bear in mind that she did this at the same time as battling against the effects of a brain tumour, realising some form of agreement from parties as far apart as Sinn Fein and the DUP.

A lot was made of the efforts of John Hulme and David Trimble in Ulster, they deservedly received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts, the input from Mo deserved a similar award. She fought the odds to mediate between the likes of Adams and Paisley, no mean feat. There is no doubt in my mind that there were stages during the peace process where guerilla war was on the verge of breaking out, it was only due to the efforts of people like Mo that prevented this from happening.

This may seem a little premature as a eulogy and certainly does not do a great politician justice but regardless of political standpoint Mo Mowlam deserves a place in all our affections.

Sad to see the demise so soon after Robin Cook of another free thinker in the Labour Party.

A spectacularly ignorant post. I would love to hear more about how you justify this point of view. Please.... entertain us.

It all appears to have gone quiet on this front, but obviously a hospice is a hospice and it's just a matter of time.

Does anyone know what is actually wrong with Mo Mowlam. It's all very sad.

Did we ever find out what was russling whilst dying in his bin?

I look forward to the thread that starts with "Looney about to croak"

It was a frog. It scared the temp into a quivering wreck - after I swapped our bins around - and I took the mick out of her being so nervy about a frog.

Holy f*** would you selfrightous tards get of your high horses.

1 She aint dead yet, as I stated so wasn't doing anything dubious.

2 she was incompetent even according to labour insiders, hence her removal.

3Responsible for peace? WTF? You'd think she'd brought it about single handedley. Fact is John Major started the negotiations for the IRA's dignified surrender, Blair continued it and deserves most the credit. Mowlam was Minister, ie the nuts and bolts of the job, which she cocked up.

According to Radio 1 news tonight, Molam is - how you say - about to croak - her condition has deteriorated. She hit her head apparently last week and it caused serious damage to already delicate tissue from a brain tumour.
