It's written on a wall down here on a plaque. Must have been some Hotel he stayed at whilst he was holding back the tide.
He was actually successful, because we get two high waters where this myth was supposed to have taken place.
**** or Canute seems to be modern English and Knut Scandinavian.

Interestingly (at least I think) this is supposed to have happened at Bosham, and also King Harold (1066) is reputed to be buried in Bosham churchyard, though a lot of that has been washed away I think by sea erosion.

Like TLO I think 'have' being spelled/spelt as 'of' is probably the biggest mis-spelling - and not just on here. And with regard to Gwylan's point about 'baited breath' becoming the accepted spelling for 'bated breath' I'm almost pleased to see that Dave the Gaffer's spelling of 'ridiculous' as 'rediculous' is rapidly gaining ground.

Also I've noticed that 'moot' and 'mooted' (as in "it's a moot point", or "it's been mooted") are often written as 'mute' and 'muted'.

a couple of years ago I was driving from Green Bay to Rock Island and did a lengthy detour to visit Oshkosh and Winnebago just to be able to say I had been there - daft but hey................................:lolol:

I did similar whilst near Amarillo just so I didn't have to ask " Is this the way to... "

I have also been to Oshkosh, but I didn't do Winnebago. However I did go to Gaylord that same day to make up for it.

To be fair, it is not a misspelling, it is the incorrect use of the word.

I think the lack of use of the apostrophe is the worst thing about the grammar on this site.

On another note, I learnt how to spell disappointed because of this site.

Lose as loose is written so often it is ridiculous.
That is the worse one. How can you mispell lose... it doesn't even LOOK right.

With things like 'role call' it seems more that people don't know the actual meaning of the term... but loose... lose... I just don't get it.
