Following your team can bring so much misery & football has a habit of kicking you in the goolies. yet, we love the game because it also has the ability, when there's no hope, to suddenly turns things around and give you that magic high.
And so it was in our 1st season in the top flight. It was always going to be tough but, after 3-4 years of being a successful club, a winning team & massive support, we were struggling out of our depth amoung the big boys, both on the pitch & on the terraces.
I think it was october and we were bottom of the League. We had just lost 4-0 at highbury in the League cup and it was one of the most inept displays by an Albion side. It that wasn't bad enough then the following saturday was away to Forest.
At that time, Forest were up with liverpool as just abouyt the top club in the country. Current European Cup holders and unbeaten at home since just about the Ice Age. They had a team packed with internationals, Shilton, Burns, Woodcock, gemmel, robertson, the list went on.
And what did we have? Well, following the midweek humiliation, mullery went out and bought...peter Suddaby, a veteran defender languishing in the reserves at 3rd div Blackpool. He also brought back Mark Lawenson straight back after a lenghy injury, but he brought him back in midfield.
It was a dull, wet, day for the faithfull Albion fans in the open end, everybody wondering just how many we would get beaten by. but Albion started brightly, very brightly, and a goal by Gerry Ryan after 12 mins was sure to spark sluggish Forest into life.
Somehow that goal was more than just a goal. Our players seemed to grow, battled & fought, chased every ball whilst we, on the terraces, revelled in what we though woulkd be brief glory.
Behind us was the electronic clock, ever ticking it's way towards 90. forest launced a barrage of attacks, Albion stood firm, hero's to a man. Forest even won a penalty but Moseley saved! Wave after wave of forest attacks broke at the line of blue & white infront of us and we cheered non stop.
The clock had long since stopped at 90 mins but when would the ref blow?. horton broke up another attack and cleared the ball into the stand and it went perfectly down one of the exits...and the ref blew!
It's hard to name your 'best ever' game but this is way up with them in the catagory of heroic 'backs to the wall' matches. This win made the football world sit up & take notice, and it gave the team the belief that they could survive in the league.
Magic moments and well done to mullers for spotting Suddaby because his experince & organisational skills stemmed the time of defeats.
