Question is who is the most important player, not who is the most legendary?

For my money, it has to be Beaney. Had he not been sold, then we may well have not been able to avoid the winding up order as, according the book, Albion, the First Hundred years, it was a winding up order rather than administration.

Reinelt's goal was important and relegation could have been terminal but equally the club may well have kept going and risen from those ashes, many have.

Not a player but first name that comes to mind.

And or Uncle Tony of course

I know. I was just adding to Silverhatches comments.

Yes, 1997 and all that, but for me it’s a toss up between Peter Ward for all the goals he scored to get is out of the 3rd Division in 77 and into the top flight on 79.

Or in modern times Gary Hart, without him so much of the success at the Withdean simply wouldn’t have happened and I doubt we’d have avoided relegation to the bottom tier either in 2009 without him. Which Tony Bloom becoming chairman the summer after and the AMEX being opened two years years later has masked how truly pivotal that survival was.

Although I sure our representative from Sweden will be along soon to tell us we're all wrong.

Thread is a perfect opportunity to think about all the great players you've seen, all the history, all the memories... and you immediatly think about me. I'm honored.

Mark Beaney.

I understand why people would say this after his sale meant the club avoided a winding up order in 1993, but if it wasn’t Beeney I’m sure Lloyd would have wheeled and dealed to sell another player to make up the funds.

If anything you could argue that this sale gave Archer and Stanley the opportunity to get their mits on the club and do their dirty work. But maybe that’s a stretch.

I'm going to put Craig Maskell up there.

We all* remember Reinelt and Storer scoring those incredibly important goals but Craig Maskell made more appearances and scored more goals. He also caused the trouble that created the chance for Reinelt. Arguably his work rate in the team kept us up.

If we were a normal club and those dark years had never happened I'd say Brian Horton or Bruno as they were the solid foundations for our two most successful teams.

*I say we all - but so many won't remember it.

But we're not thinking about all the great players we've seen, all the history, all the memories, we're thinking about the most important player.

Any fan of any club that's had a history as tumultuous as the Albion are all acutely aware of the difference.

From a very hazy memory, so happy to be wrong, we played on the Saturday expecting to be wound up by HMRC early the following week.

Our entrance to the Premier League is pretty damned significant if you ask me.

To open the door of the Premier League, you need goals.

Glenn Murray was the key to promotion, we lent that key to our fiercest rivals.

Glenn Murray’s input will ensure we are a big player for decades, we just needed the initial promotion and goals to survive last season.

I think you’re right. But it’s also true that many clubs have gone that close and been reprieved at the eleventh hour. If it wasn’t the sale of Beeney, I’m sure it would have been something else that pulled us out of the fire.

I think you're absolutely right about it being the “most important” not legendary. And I think it’s straight up between Beeney vs Reinelt and it’s very hard to call.

We can’t know for certain what would have happened if we had gone out the league, but I think there’s a strong possibility we would have gone bust. We nearly did even though we stayed in the league. In non league, with a less on the gate and less revenue I’ve always thought we would have gone out of business. I imagine we would have reformed like AFC Wimbledon etc, but without his family ties to a brand new club, would Tony Bloom have got involved?

Beeney’s transfer definitely kept the club alive, but without Reinelt’s goal I doubt we’d be in the Premier League now. I can’t decide between them, and I’m happy for them to share the honour of most important players.
