One I should have felt embarrassed at I suppose, was The Damned in San Francisco. I persuaded a Grateful Dead-head mate to go along. He was a peaceful hippy, used to patchouli-drenched nature-girls spinning with tie-dyes and breast feeding at gigs - didn't know anything about the Damned. Cpt. Sensible swore profusely at the audience, and it was generally a violent crowd with bottles bouncing around.
Even stranger, someone filmed it... and it's on youtube!
They got the date wrong, but it's enough to get the idea of what it was like (there's some odd b&w footage of people gazing lovingly and stuff, but that was obviously dubbed from an Elvis gig or something)
