Personally I have a lot of sympathy with teachers because they not only get stick from their pupils but quite often the parents, I didn't like school much but I had no issue with the teachers who in the main did a good job. The headmaster was a twat but in most kids eyes headmasters are.

Can't honestly say I dislike any particular profession (not even recruitment consultants) but like others here it's down to individuals in all walks. Having said that for the last few weeks I've been working for a civil service department and like some of the others I've worked for in the past there is an element amongst them who have a rather high opinion of themselves. Ironically I've found the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise staff very friendly and polite.

The phrase "far too much money" in relation to nurses and not footballers? Oh come on. When was the last time a footballer saved a life.

I am only joking Penguin. Its scandalous the way they are treated.

Now the police.................... they really are overpaid.

Sorry I aint having that, my mum is a headtecher and she is Bloody good at her job. Yes they get a lot of holiday time, but it is one of the toughest jobs out there. Its not unknown for her to do a 12 hour day from time to time.

generalisation there from Questions.

Couldn't agree more. My Mum is a primary school teacher, and yes, she may get a lot of holiday, but spends a lot of it working preparing for the next term. It also isn't a simple 9-5 job as she spends most of her evenings marking/preparing lessons for the next day as well. Very hard job IMO and some of the parents don't help from what I've heard!

I find teachers attitudes highly unproffesional. A kind of know it all arrogance that belies the fact that about 50% of their charges are leaving school illiterate and inemerate.

A true Profession is self critical and not one that closes ranks all the time, do teachers have any professional Journals?

Of couse there are good ones, there are also a load of duff ones, as well as duff teaching methods and especially duff "Educational theorists".

A lot of the problems are not their fault but a lot of the time they do themselves no favours.

I meant to work with. I found them very easy going and helpful although Customs and Excise do not like the Revenue and vice versa. The Civil Servants I mean are the lower level, been there man (or woman) and boy (or girl) and are filled with their own very minor and petty self importance. To be honest some of them haven't a clue who the real world operates and think that money is of no consequence as it's not theirs and they have no share holders to answer to.

You're right to a point there but it's down to individuals in the main. Like any other profession there are good and bad. What concerns me more are bad professional people such as doctors, lawyers and accountants. You go to them and more often than not pay for their advice but if they get it wrong it's not easy to get any redress.
