When we were in the EU we belonged to a scheme where we returned a very small number of migrants while getting a greater number sent here from other EU countries. The chances someone who had travelled across numerous EU safe countries to get here would be deterred from jumping in a boat by a very small chance of being sent back seems very unlikely to me. There are still safe routes open for some refugees to get here despite repeated claims we shut them all. This suggests the reasons behind the recent big increases in crossings are not as simplistic as saying Brexit..brexit..brexit.
You seem happy to post your thoughts without any actual facts, so what are your thoughts on the reasons for a FIFTY fold increase in less than 4 years ???

Penny for his thoughts, eh?

The 'sent from other EU countries', like there was an import and export of asylum seekers, is also complete nonsense.

Like the old 'labour bans baa baa blacksheep' trope, and the fact that William Shatner's real name is Bill Shitz, repeat a lie and someone will believe it if it suits their confirmation bias.

The relationship that the fifty-fold increase in four years has with brexit is statistically far more convincing than, for example, that between the recent (150 year) increase in average global temperature ('global warming) and human activity.

Still....whatabout Jeremy Corbyn, though?

Where on earth did you get this information from? It’s all untrue. It’s lies. That either you are making up or have believed it from somewhere.

There are some very intelligent, well informed posters on this board who don’t just accept anything that is claimed by other posters or media outlets and while I have no particular beef with you (you are clearly just another gammon who’s angry and in denial), you’d do well to remember that people will question posts that are clearly full of misinformation and lies.

Perhaps it`s you who should read a few books , and read about how before joining the EU we had shipyards all round the British isles building some of the biggest and best ships both Merchant and Royal Navy . You can also read about how many aircraft companies we had building al types of planes including some of the worlds best fighter planes , also how many car manufacturers we had , that we now don`t .

Due to the EU agreement we were hamstrung right up until Brexit , the current Government has made a giant balls of things yes , but can you see any better from anywhere else ? . It will take time , but we will grow our economy for the benefit of us not for Brussels . We were the go to country for funds for all those that weren`t pulling their weight , continually being told by Eurocrats what we can and cant do .

Ask yourself this , if we weren`t so important to them , why did they make it so bloody hard for us to leave
Maybe you could give an example or two of things they did that 'made it so bloody hard to leave' :dunce:
maybe I missed it but did you ever get a reply to this perfectly reasonable question?

Dublin Regulation

In 2018, there were 1,940 requests from other member states to transfer individuals into the UK under the Dublin Regulation, and 5,510 requests from the UK to transfer individuals out of the UK to other member states.

Over the same period, there were 1,215 transfers into the UK under the Dublin Regulation. The majority (946) of these transfers came from Greece.

There were 209 transfers out of the UK under the Dublin Regulation. A quarter of these (51) were transfers to France.

You are right there are many intelligent well informed people on this board, sadly not many on this thread though.

No, unsurprisingly I didn't. He said something about 'vaccines' but despite ranting about 'how the EU made it so difficult for us to leave', he couldn't come up with a single example

And the 2018 figures are really relevant to the position the Government has managed to get us into now

The Dublin Regulation only applied whilst we were in the EU. It is invalid now, so we cannot send anyone back.

You also have believe that despite the fact there are safe routes, these people either just ignore or are unaware of this and instead, travel half way round the world, shack up in squalid conditions in north of France, pay thousands of pounds/euros, engage in crime, then risk their lives crossing the channel. This doesn't need access to the right information but basic comprehension to realise it's complete bollox

Yes. Brexit put an end to the Dublin Regulation. It no longer exists.

It takes a man/woman/non-binary/other? of some character, honesty, and integrity to admit they were incorrect in their accusations of lies and making stuff up when they are proved completely wrong ... your reply speaks volumes. Also, Dublin regulations/agreement still exists but no longer applies to the Uk because of the decision made by the UK government meaning a very small proportion of asylum seekers can't be returned but also means we are no longer obligated to take a larger proportion of asylum seekers from the EU.

You were going to give us your thoughts on the reasons for this FIFTY fold increase. Remember ? :dunce:

The 2018 figures, when we were still in the EU and subject to the Dublin agreement are relevant in answer to the accusation I was making stuff up/lying.

My thoughts and observations on why we have seen such a big increase are as follows ...

1.) A Rapid increase was already taking place when we were still in the EU subject to the Dublin agreement (2018/19).

2.) Increased boat crossings while we were still in the EU successfully delivered their desperate human cargo encouraging smuggling gangs to rapidly expand their operations.

3.) Increased security around the channel tunnel over recent years tunnel meant new crossing points were needed/criminal gangs had to change their approach.

4.) Increasingly poor conditions in northern France at the refugee camps and hostile treatment combined with the above points.

5.) There seems to be some evidence that criminal Albanian gangs are trafficking large numbers of people taking advantage of the lax security along the French coast and our inability to process such large numbers.

In conclusion, I don't believe many/any desperate asylum seekers or criminal gang members would give a shit about the vanishingly small chance of being returned via the Dublin agreement and if you toured any of the camps in northern France I doubt anyone has even heard of it. But I am happy to be persuaded otherwise, so if you or anyone else can show conclusive evidence that large numbers (thousands) suddenly decided to risk their lives because we were no longer in the EU and subject to the Dublin agreement then fair play

Small boat Channel crossings: Mayor of Calais says UK is too appealing to asylum seekers

Natacha Bouchart says that it is far too easy for migrants to slip into the 'black economy' in Britain, partly thanks to a lack of identity cards.

She says migration has damaged the image of her town, and castigated British charity groups who, she claims, "disturb public order".
