Surely a new deal on massive wages would only be offered without a release clause ? The purpose of the offer would be in part to protect/increase his resale value. Anyway, they won’t break the wage structure for one player so it would be a case of making him one of our highest earners rather than anything else.

Agree with the first bit, but I'm prepared to bet that every single time in the last 10 years that the wage structure has been 'broken' it's been for one player, and I would think it highly likely that the last time was a few months ago for AliMac. It's how stepped incremental improvement is supported and it's simply whether Caicedo justifies it

I understand your point, but if the fee is high enough, then you've already accepted that as the fee, and to keep control you could have certain stipulations, such as 'summer window only, and not on the last month'

Of course we can include stipulations but we still lose a lot of control. We may hit the summer window and realise we still don't want to sell and he's vital for next seasons assault on a European trophy. If Arsenal, Chelsea or anyone match the release clause we'd be powerless to stop him leaving if that's what he wanted. We'd have to make the release fee astronomical to at least cushion the blow of losing him.

Well obviously a short contract would significantly lower a player's value, but I don't know if there becomes a limit where a longer contract no longer adds to the value (eg, after 4 or 5 years). But the point is, he wouldn't sign a new contract that doesn't offer him something useful, and given that Arsenal and Chelsea just tried to sign him, I wouldn't expect him to make it even harder to leave in the summer.

Yes, but if the club is saying that it won't stand in a player's way, does that not mean we have to accept a large offer anyway? This window it was more reasonable to say no, because we're mid season with no chance to replace him, and he hadn't even played a season for us. Let's say he doesn't sign a new contract, and we're offered £80m in the summer, and he asks to leave - do you think we'll say no?

I was thinking that the Palace match is perfect for galvanising the fan base for the team against a common enemy. Literally could not care less what anyone has done before when it's that match. If they are wearing blue and white, previous sins will be forgiven.

But I suppose with Mac's suspension we need him for Saturday. I think RDZ will throw him straight back in.

He has two + one years left at the end of this season. He doesn't need a new contract but I'm sure under the terms of the existing one he can be given a pay rise

Irrespective of any boos,and there might be a few that do, he'll soon be cheered and his song sang with gusto when he does his normal in a game.
