My response was more about him being loyal / his allegiance to Brighton - he’s the same as every player and as long as he could get paid what he wanted he was, but if a bigger club had been in for him he would have been off

We seem to have a good record of cashing in on a player and reinvesting the money to give an overall improvement.

I make it around 170m income on transfers and compo for Potter, and probably only about 30-50m of that (Biss + Maupay) was budgeted for. I imagine that our scouting team and data analytics could have some serious fun investing that extra 120m!

The Problem with attracting players with the lure of letting them speak to bigger clubs is what happens when you become a "bigger" club?
This leads to the potential problem of big clubs rather than focusing their money on building a better squad they also indulge in picking smaller clubs clean of talent. This is a problem that TB faces.

I think a top 4 spot is more important than the cup for various reasons, not only will we get more funds to keep talent, top 4 teams tend to stay there a while wereas a cup can be seen as a fluke ( Wigan etc). Its easier to see or sell "4th this year and first the next".

Exactly. We have our model. Given others will always pay more then there is no point trying to be something we are not and if it did go wrong we would be screwed.

We will never be able to hold the best players in the world (which let’s face it Alexis and Caicedo are in the discussion for top tier players) so we need to enjoy them while they are here and accept they will leave. If we offer 100k then they will offer 200k. If we go 200 then they go higher. We can’t compete. So no point wasting money trying.

Is it annoying? Of course it is. But unless you are one of the mega rich clubs then it is tough.

The of the advantages of buying a player from us is that there's much room for manoeuvre on salary. If trossard was on £80k per week here he'd not be moving for £27m. So it costs us more to receive less if players are sold.

If its about keeping the talent then big salaries plus European football is required. We're a way off that currently and will never be able to compete with the top 6 fir salaries anyway.

There's somewhere in the middle I guess but where to pitch it won't be straight forward.

I would think that clubs will catch on wrt Cucarella that the club that unsettles the player doesn't get him, remember this is the kind of gamesmanship that TB is primed for.
