How about you don't demand a release clause in the first place. You either want to sign and play for us or you don't.
Or say to him, have a release clause set at the value you think you'll be worth in a couple of years

Release clauses diminishes our leverage in transfer deals we have no interest in them.
We want players who want to play for us, not players who are already negotiating their exit.

So why was it ok for Alexis ?

I don’t think players would know how to negotiate a release clause…… but agents certainly do. I’m sure Kidus is briefed but that’s all.

Was massively different. He was rewarded with a new contract for his service and this was added then.

But it diminished our position and we had to sell him massively under value. So you can’t say we’d never do something when we have done it

It actually strengthened our position at the time. The club agreed that particular clause because it was mutually beneficial under the specific circumstances. Note that while the headline transfer fee is on a small side, we were able to get larger than usual add-ons. That wasn't a simple release clause, there was more to it.

£35M is the only figure we can guarantee - it’s massively undervalued. So you can’t say ‘we’d never do that’ etc

Really? Alexis had given us years of service and was on his way out as his contract run down. The player and the club then came to a mutually agreeable extension so that Alexis retained some value in the transfer market, it's a completely different situation.

So we can be flexible, in the right circumstances. Rather than just walking away / saying no

Personally I can’t see why a ‘tiered’ release clause wouldn’t work. I.e if Brighton finish
Bottom half of table, a champions league club could trigger a £60M release clause kind of thing.

Unfortunately we are a risky move for any player used to European football

The club will make whatever decision they deem to be in their interest.

We have decided not to pursue Kudus at this moment due to those complications, are you suggesting the club are mistaken?

Release clauses are a lot more common on the continent than they are here. It’s the norm in many leagues so not surprising some players will still ask for them.

I seem to remember Cucu taking all summer. I think Kudus’ agent has taken us to our maximum. It’s good to walk away. They can come back when they realise what a good deal they’ve bagged.

As for West Ham, allegedly approaching the agent 1st might not go down well with Ajax.

Ok, how about 'We'd never guarantee an exit route to a player who hasn't even f**king pulled on an Albion shirt'?

As I said before, it's like a woman discussing a pre-nup agreement whilst the guy is down on one knee.

From memory, the add-ons were reported as being easily achievable. So I'm confident we'll get more than £35m. Let's also not forget that had we refused to give that to him when he signed the new contract, he would not have signed it and we would have been selling him from a much weaker position - eg forced to sell in January, potentially for not much more than we actually got, and lose him for the Europe push.

In that specific case, accepting the "release clause" (in quotes because as I understand it, it wasn't a standard release clause at all) was of immediate benefit to the club. If he'd asked for it back when he originally signed for us, the club would have told him where to stick it.

We are flexible and can take every case on its merits.

Alexis had so much credit in the bank.... this guy has zero.
