4:25 in. :)

Just seen this. So he hated it because it was muddy, his drink was spiked, he had a 6 month old kid and he doesn't appeared to have got any star treatment. Ahh poor Pete Townsend :lolol:

Not quite the vitriol towards the hippy generation you suggested the Who felt from comments you made earlier in the thread.

Townsend definitely went through a hippie phase, taking f*** loads of acid and embracing the mystical baba bollocks that was in the air at the time. I had a really interesting chat with uber mod Paolo Hewitt once where he claimed him and Paul Weller thought The Who were only really mod up until around 1966 and then were just a full on rock band. Lets be honest, you couldn't have a better example of hippy self indulgence than Tommy done as a full blown rock opera with orchestra. A long long way from 'The Kid's are Alright'.

Alot of the very original London mods in London were actually the first early hippies once the drugs moved from speed/booze towards hash/acid around '65. There's a whole sub genre called Heavy/acid Mod around this time with bands like The Creation, think Mojo did a free compilation a few years ago. There's a great verbatim book of the time by Jonathan Green called 'Days in the Life' which documents this really well from the major original mod faces at the time, people like Ace Face Pete Measden, think Townsend is in it as well. And Steve Marriot of course left The Small Faces to form Humble Pie, an out and out hippie band.

Quite a few posts on this thread regarding the 'original' 60's mods, but, of course, the original 'Modernists' were frequenting jazz clubs some 10 years before The Who/Small Faces/beach riots etc.

But not embracing the hippie bollocks you made out either. :p

Steve, The Who didn't record Tommy with a full-blown orchestra. Nor did they perform it with one until the 1990s.

OK, you early rockers, lets see if you can name the rocker cafes around Brighton at the time.
