[Football] Minutes Applause for Regis.

I like the NCS as we are able to answer such softball questions late on a Friday night.

For me this is a clear and easy one. Football is a religion that gives some really brilliant footballers, and undeserving people, fame and fortune. However it also gives some incredible people a platform from which to spread their influence far beyond what they could have done otherwise. Cyril was one of those footballers, and his influence has changed the world in a very meaningful way. To celebrate that is to celebrate what the game itself can bring, and the character of the player that made it possible. As many others have said, applauding that is certainly not going to hurt.

We should also be proud that as a club we have had (and have) many payers and coaches that fit this mould, Chris and Inigo among many others. Perhaps we cannot expect fans from other clubs to have a minute of silence for them in the future, but I hope we will.

It's the fashion to go over the top when someone dies and maybe exaggerate what they did. When you hear people praising him I get it that
some of them are just repeating the praises of others and don't actually know what he did.

He seemed a nice guy and for sure he was one of the better known players from that era I grew up in. However a minutes silence is over the top. Do it for him and you have to do it for anyone on his level.

In this PC era he is probably getting a minutes silence through pressure because he is black.

... which is longhand for "I really don't know what I'm on about because pig ignorance is my stock-in-trade, and I'm going to make sure everyone knows that loud and clear..."

Maybe anyone seeing no reason why this bloke should be singled out for applause could just accept this as a little redress for the past, as there was also no reason why he should have ever been singled out for abuse.

You sound surprised that 'Gazz' and 'Renegade' are allowed to post nonsensical shite.. Seem to remember another Chelsea fan being banned for racism... can't think who but it definitely wasn't 'not nick rhodes'. Definitely not. That's why nobody suspects that 'gazz' and 'Renegade' are the same ****ing waste of bandwith-Chelsea-supporting ****.

Obviously.

Not only jumps on our bandwagon, but is also a ****ing glory-hunting piece of shit that will inevitably gloat while protesting innocence if and when Chelsea beat us tomorrow.

Prick.

A number of black players have already passed away without a minutes silence or applause.

So we can safely conclude that this has more attached to it than that.

It has already been explained above why his death has had a marker laid against it above the passing of other players over the years.

If, in reading some of the responses above, you still cannot appreciate the significance and legacy of Cyrille Regis then so be it.

You are, however, missing a point of reflection that you would do well to look harder for.

Given his posting history i think that his ignorance is wilful and designed to garner attention.

Stick this one in the best ignored camp.

If any of those confused have not read this article written by one of our own I suggest you do.

If you are still confused about why he deserves a minutes applause, try one of the many other articles. If you are still not sure or come to the conclusion that it is driven by political correctness because he is black then you probably are beyond help and should just try to keep away from sharp objects and other people.

****This of course, doesn't include Renegade who is using the death of one of the greats of football to get himself some more much desired attention.

I generally abhor all those North Korean-style, orchestrated tributes to people with no obvious connection to the Albion (which reached a tragi-comical nadir a few years back in a queasy, foot-shuffling silence for that poor, freshly-beheaded scouser Ken Bigley)

But I fully recognise that today's planned minute does have an inescapably poignant significance. Especially for our extraordinary manager - still, shockingly, the only non-white gaffer among England's 92 clubs.

Cyrille Regis paved the way. Chris Hughton shows there's still a long, long way to go.

This thread is a microcosm of our society. OP asks a question which, it transpires is informed by a lack of knowledge. Cue a binfest. I didn't actually read 'political correctness gone mad' but I'm sure its there somewhere. When the facts are explained the accepts the points graciously. Meanwhile a small minority start 'yeah'ing and 'whatabout'ing. Then the OP gets hammered again for the original post. Then the 'yeah' boys start whatabouting again. FFS. People don't read, don't think, don't read, don't think.... Focusing on nothing other than their own tiny lives and their own mainstream experiences. Sad, really.

To be fair, a lot of that is down to the nature of a 'thread'. People naturally respond to the OP. If you haven't read the whole thread (imagine reading the Brexit thread to check someone hasn't already made your point!) then you're not going to know how the conversation has developed.

That said, there's been some excellent posts on here, particularly those honest enough to talk about their own experiences.

Ouch, yes I was getting confused with Bushy/Alfred arguing about the Millwall game yesterday.

Ironic that you hold you hand up to admit to being wrong about something in relation to that thread. If only others would follow your example!

Leaving aside the debate about whether we as a society go too over the top with public outpourings of grief (the Diana effect) I understand that many people were inspired by Cyrille Regis and I'm not complaining about him having a minute's applause.

But (genuine question) why is he in particular being picked out as the pioneer black footballer? He wasn't the first - Albert Johansson played at the top level for Leeds in the 60s (not a lot of notice was taken of his death in 1995), and before that there were the likes of Alfred Charles, Roy Brown, Jack Leslie (apparently selected to play for England, but then unselected because of his colour), Walter Tull, Fred Corbett, Albert Wharton et al. Admittedly, West Brom. were very probably the first team to include three black players, Regis, Cunningham and Batson, aka the Three Degrees (was calling them that racist by the way?)

Laurie Cunningham died some years ago, but his death didn't attract the same attention as Cyrille's - no minute's applause in those days, but it was pre-Diana I suppose. Anyway, RIP Cyrille, and if you are able to look down from up there, enjoy the respect of your minute's applause..

Could be that is was pre Diana when we were all about the stiff upper lip. It could also be that no-one thought about it at that time, were 'Kick it Out' going at that time? It may just be that he was the higest profile of those you mentioned and the attention he got from the terraces was higher profile also.

Reminds me of the monkey and banana chants at the Goldstone.

Not forgetting that completely racialist song at the Goldstone when Justin Fashanu played for Norwich City

Always preferred LC to CR but to be fair to the latter, he had more of an impact because of his work after he retired particularly with the Kick it out campaign.

Always seemed like a good guy on the pitch. Great team West Brom has then. I will put my hands together.

Sadly I am old enough to have lived through this era to witness bananas being thrown onto the pitch at the Goldstone. For all those on this thread who appear to be clueless, I just hope that they never have to suffer a fraction of the prejudice that CR and his contempories did. Hard to beieve we are still trying to kick racism out of the game after all these years.

The round of applause for Cyrille Regis was a wonderful moment to watch, where all showed their respect for a great ambassador to our game.
