[Sussex] Mingling with the Rich and Famous

Some time in the early 80's I met Kate Bush's Dad at an Army Resettlement presentation we'd organised for GPs. Over the three days of this event (held at a civilian hospital) he was the only GP who turned up! Needless to say, the Powers That Be decided we wouldn't do this again!. Shame Kate wasn't with him, but I did discover how important her brother was to her career and what (in Dr. Bush's opinion) a great photographer he was.

Back in the late 80s, daily meet ups in well-to-do establishments sipping G&Ts with Heroes of Telemark legend (+ The Adventures of Robin Hood, A Tale of Two Cities, Dixon of Dock Green, Danger Man, Kessler, The Forsyte Saga, Man in a Suitcase, The Avengers, Colditz, Doctor at Large, Gazette, Public Eye, Sutherland's Law, Softly, Softly, The Professionals, Rumpole of the Bailey, A Tale of Two Cities, Prince Regent, Doctor Who, Bergerac, Miss Marple, Dempsey and Makepeace, Rockliffe's Babies, Howards' Way, A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster) Ralph Michael.

I've stood next to, & had a chat with, "El Capitan" & funny man Joe Wilkinson in the East Stand loos at the Amex.

My wife used to go to tea with Gerald Durrell at his house at Jersey Zoo when she was a kid.

I expect quite a few other NSC cricket players will have met the actor Michael Jayston who has played for Rottingdean for many years. Starred in lots of TV and films. Very pleasant chap who bowls some rather tempting leg breaks.

I met Lee Evans after a gig once, and had also bumped into him twice on London streets. Really is the nicest bloke, and seemed fully aware that people were excited to meet him, and so he spent proper time chatting to them.

Biggest regret is I never managed to meet Pete Shelley, (of the Buzzcocks)
Always thought our paths would cross and they never did

I had a piss standing in the next urinal to Ian Paisley (sr) in a HoC bog, and he was certainly a unit. A quick google says he was apparently 6’5”. I’d guess he was 18 stone.

Mrs WS's uncle was sent to Pentonville Prison for stealing Bernie Winter's Rolls Royce ( with Schnorbitz still in it ). He then escaped before being recaptured ( the uncle not Schnorbitz ! ).

She's a colleague, not really famous, perhaps niche famous you could say, quite famous in Denmark, Lone Droscher Nielson who you'd have seen if you ever watched Orangutan Diaries on the telly ten years or so back. Anyway the pair of us enjoyed entertaining Mr Ford for a few days in Borneo 7 years ago or so. He spent a good deal of time explaining he wasn't anything like Indiana Jones before flying a small plane over the forest, eating dried crickets, and generally being exactly like Indiana Jones. I've spent time with a few moderately famous TV presenters but this was true fame, a guy who turns heads anywhere he goes and is so comfortable being who he is.

And after an evening of round after rounds of gin and tonics in the hotel bar I learnt the meaning of starstruck, when back home I couldnt wipe the grin off my face for hours!

Met a rapper called Akon in a lift in India. Didn’t know who he was until my daughter told me.

He was “doing a set” for a private party in the hotel bar which turned out to be the Venky family.

Met Judge Jules in Ibiza at Sunset Bar and had no clue who the feck he was. Not into the music but stunned mates who told me after, being too scared to come over at the time were. I did wonder why all the intimidating guys in black were milling around the two of us.

Met Trevor Nelson, Vernon Kay, Martin Johnson etc. through American Football back in the day along with likes of dearly missed Kevin Cadle. Three of the four were lovely!

Had an odd conversation with a drunk Ben Miller in London when I was a student deciding on whether to go to Uni there.

The fact to me a Lewis Dunk brief convo was a ‘bigger name’ than any of these is probably best kept on NSC!

Mark Williams bought me a Harveys in the Lord Nelson a few years back. He was with an old mate of mine.

Also, went to see a Peter Cook and Dudley Moore show in NYC when I was about 13, 1974. Was with my Mum. Somehow, she blagged our way backstage and we had a good chat with them. Dud actually said "you were in the 2nd row". He was worried that some of the content was a bit naughty for a young lad to hear.

Both of them were charming and Pete loved my Mum's Dublin accent and was chatting away to her with an Irish accent. What a memory.
