Why? Didn't do Craig Charles any harm and he had a stay on remand.

Did him a huge amount of harm. He lost a £385,000 job with Channel 5 and that was within weeks of the initial arrest.

Surely there would be a case for suing a woman for damages if she falsely accuses you of rape. However, think how terrible that would be for the woman who is raped but whose attacker is found not guilty on a technicality or because of an inept prosecution.

Anonymity is the only way for this particular offence/charge/allegation. It is second only to killing somebody but has a stigma attached to it-and the man accused is nearly always deemed to be guilty instantly which isn't right.

Wait until the charges have been proven/not proven before disclosing names and pictures. I don't know what I'd do if I was accused of a rape I didn't commit and then find my name and picture in the newspapers along with the journo's 'verdict'.

If guilty-do what you like with the scumbag. If not guilty....

Convictions rates for rape are very low. Partly I feel this is due to the prejudices displayed in many of the posts above. Many people's sympathies lie with the alleged rapist rather than his alleged victim. I find this rather odd, particularly as had the player been charged with assault most of the sympathisers would be baying for his blood.

I'm not displaying sympathies with the alleged rapist, however, until proven guilty the person is only an alleged rapist and needs protecting as much as the alleged victim. Each for different reasons but justifiable reasons in my eyes. Once found guilty-cut the bastard's balls off for all I care.

Lets hope he gets 10 years in the slammer.

Even if not guilty?

A perfect illustration of why anonymity is needed.

With assualt there is often clear evidence. Ulrika for example.
Also, and I may be wrong, I can not remember any cases where someone has inflicted wounds on themselves to gain publicity.
The money and recognition comment was made in relation to women who falsely claim rape and not intended as a statement of fact about all women. I apologise, the post I made was very unclear.
Dougdeep what does it matter where I come from. (unless you are being sarcastic.)
