The problem being that one is a sovereign country and the other a terrorist organization. The former has higher international standards to comply with and which they are seemingly comprehensively ignoring.

So now that the Hamas head honcho has been killed, Israel can concentrate on negotiating the hostage releases and call an end to the conflict.

Those negotiations would by necessity require a change in ideology on the part of Hamas, so I'd imagine they'd be quite tricky.

Do we know if any of the remaining hostages are actually still alive?

The terrorists indeed deserve what they get (both Hamas and the IDF). Problem being is that a vast majority of those killed are innocent civilians - do they "deserve what they get" ? Do aid workers, doctors and UN Peacekeepers "deserve what they get" ?
