It always amazes me that interviewers and politicians always ask and go on about a strike inconveniencing people. Of course it does - if a strike had no impact, there would be no point to it!

Chair of the Labour Party Annelise Dodds says the whips' office will look into the presence of a shadow minister on the picket line with the RMT union.

Sam Tarry, a shadow transport minister, was with strikers in Euston this morning, despite Sir Keir Starmer saying his shadow team should stay away.

If I’m right, then according to Andrew Haynes at Network Rail they have offered an 8% rise over two years with guarantees of no redundancies and no increase in un contracted hours. Mick Lynch refutes that.

If Haynes is telling the truth then let’s see the offer. Also, why doesn’t he and his negotiators look further than two years and get a formula in place so some of the lowest paid workers on the railways have some guarantee of pay increases. These are not workers on £60k a year.

These strikes are a legacy of the privatisation of the transport sector by the Tories (and New Labour) - the intent was to pump billions of public money into the pockets of private companies and it has been a disaster for the workforces and for commuters. Every year the government provide massive subsidies to the rail (and bus) companies and every year these companies rake in huge profits while driving up fares and attempting to drive down jobs, wages and working conditions. The success of this strike by the RMT is in the interests of every single worker in Britain and every single commuter - and huge numbers realise this, which is why the RMT have receieved significant public support for the strike.

As for Lynch - well the RMT have traditionally been one of the better organised and more militant trade unions in Britain. Lynch has shown what a straight-talking and competent trade union official can do when faced with the antics of right-wing (and far-right in the case of Piers Morgan) political correspondents and interviewers. Lynch is following on from the traditions of Bob Crow and the others in the leadership of the RMT that have come before him. It is interesting that one competent trade union leader can have such an impact in terms of the media - and goes to show how incompetent most of the rest of the leaders of the trade union movement are and have been (Sharon Graham of Unite would be another exception as would Matt Wrack of the FBU). Unfortunately we do not have any union leader in Ireland remotely as competent as Mick Lynch (which is why a lot of memes are floating around social media saying that Irish workers want to put a transfer bid in for Lynch).

I think all UK nurses should just walk out and go on strike too due to their shit pay.

You can bet if every nurse in the country walked out for a couple of days the government would have to initiate a decent pay rise as the hospitals simply could'nt operate without them.

Things may be returning to the days of the early 80's but we all need more money.

I think we have all been waiting in vain hoping that Tory " Trickle Down " economics works... all we have seen is an erosion of Workers Rights and the slide in to the gig economy where everyone at the sharp end of a job seems to be working harder for less.

As pointed out, its always the workers who are expected to tighten their belts. The rail companies always increase fares by something like the rate of inflation + 1.5% , the workers never see that same pay rise, instead they try to cut jobs to make even more money.

"As a government in waiting, any breach of collective responsibility is taken extremely seriously and for these reasons Sam Tarry has been removed from the frontbench."
Responding to his dismissal, Mr Tarry - a supporter of the former leader Jeremy Corbyn - thanked Sir Keir for "the last two and a half years" on the front bench, but said it was "a real shame" he had been removed for "joining a picket line".
