You got high and mighty about a comment made by Chappers about blindness, but happy to laugh and joke about depression? Strange man.

That's why I responded with "prat", the same comment he made to Chappers, to highlight the hypocrisy.

That would be ignorant comments from the same Geoffrey Boycott who refused to play for England from 1974 to 1977 as he couldn't face batting against the quick bowlers that were coming through, and whose captaincy of Yorkshire was based on an inclusive team ethos (hardly!) .

and who, on the 1978-9 tour of australia effectively cut himself off from the team when his mother died. Of course, he hasn't ever put himself ahead of a team...........

Michael Vaughan has commented very sympathetically to Yardy's situation, cricket has more suicides than any other sport.

what did boycott say exactly?

'I'm very surprised, but he must have been reading my comments about his bowling. 'That must have upset him because it's obviously too much for him at this level. If there's any blame attached it's partly to the selectors who have done an excellent job on picking the Ashes side but I'm sorry, he's not good enough at this level. He doesn't bowl for Sussex in their Championship matches, he bowls in the one day, but at this level, sorry, bowling round-arm, into the legs, without any spin and without any flight, you've got to be so perfectly accurate.

'He's got to go home, but for me it's very difficult. I'm no doctor, I'm no medical man, I don't understand about the depression and I can't comment on it. I certainly wouldn't be nasty about it because I don't know. I've never been in that position. I've been, with respect, a better player, I've been able to hold my place in the team for Yorkshire and England, so I've always got picked, played pretty good, so I've not been in that position where my quality of play has been poor and it's got to me mind-wise.'

What a ****.

Yardy has sought help. Presumably Boycott just took his troubles out on his, then, lover.

I think people are being a bit harsh on Boycott here to be honest. Ok he's being quite egotistical (no surprise there) but his comments about Yardy's cricketing ability are very frank certainly, but also pretty accurate too in my view. Just look at his ODI record, it's really nowhere near good enough.
Yardy is clearly a good bloke but would he have left for depression if he had been playing a leading role in the team in recent matches? I guess the fact that they have said it's depression means we are not allowed to ask the questions many of us (including Boycott) are thinking. Fair enough, benefit of doubt and all that.

Jonno have you considered the chance that Yardy was playing poorly because of depression rather than he was depressed because his form was poor?

It's the fact he links the two. he's going home because he suffers from depression not because of the quality of his bowling. That's what Boycott and you don't seem to understand. The answer to your question is yes, he would still have gone home.

Sure, perhaps you're right, I'm sure there is more to it than that. I guess it doesn't really pay to speculate too much on it, we just don't know. I wish him all the best.

I hear the Boycott interview on 5Live this morning and I was shocked. It's as if the Marcus Trescothick case had never happened!

I'm fairly hard-nosed and have criticised Trescothick about his illness in the past, but clearly it's a problem with cricketers so when you hear of a case you at least listen and find out what's behind it.

Boycott's comments which Easy has transcribed are incredibly insensitive. Yardy deserves more respect from a senior pundit - he's a 20/20 World Cup winner and a Championship winning captain with Sussex. Is Boycott pissed off because Yardy was chosen ahead of Adil Rashid?

Personally, I like the earthiness of commentators like Rod Marsh, Ron Atkinson, Tony Greig etc but Boycott's gone too far this time. Put him out to grass...

True, it may well be a problem with cricketers, but it's also a problem with people in general - take a look at 20 of your friends; statistically, 4 of them will suffer from some form of mental illness during their lives.

Depression is a horrible illness; I know, cos I'm off work with it at the moment, although am improving.

If anyone wants to know how they would know if they're suffering from it, I would say this - think of when you're looking for new clothes, and you kind of know what you want, but you know that something is right when you see it and try it on?

Well, depression's a bit like that - you'll know that it is it when it hits you - and it really does hit you.

And it can hit anyone in any circumstance, any work, successful or not.

Well said. I always liked Spike Milligan's description. You're in bed and the doorbell rings and you know that the person at the door is the most important person you'll ever meet in your life, but however hard you try, you just can't seem to get out from under the duvet.

Paolo - as you say, you know when it hits you and you see the reaction of people you know who can see it and don't know what to say.

All the best to you and Yardy.

Depression is effing awful, not helped by people who pontificate about it but don't actually know anything. Sympathy isn't expected, but understanding is helpful & failing that, silence is often the best option. Good luck to Yardy.

Is this the same Geoff Boycott that batted for Boycott County Cricket Club & Boycottland ?
