What, so they just invented the story and then it happened to be true? They (who according to the BBC are actually a well-respected website who've broken a lot of stories in the last couple of years) obviously got it confirmed from somewhere before anyone else managed to, and that's why everyone else has been saying the reports are unconfirmed - because they haven't yet had confirmation themselves. As Wozza says, fair play to them.
