Worthing
Wouldn't it be a much better spectacle if all the cars were the same and it was down to the driver's skill?

I must be missing something here probably because I am not very keen on motor racing.

What is wrong with somebody using the infoprmation from other teams to better their own.

If Man Utd had somebody watch Chelsea training and thought thats a good idea w'ell try that and it worked would they be kicked out of the Premiership.

Or England studied Shane Warne and filmed him etc to enable their batsmen to do better against him would they be banned of course not.

So can somebody explain to me how anything that Mc Laren did whether they spied on or even copied the Mafias Favourite Racing Cars and or engine etc can this be wrong. Is this not the whole point of compeition to get the best out of your car and if somebody else has a better one then obviously you follow suit.

brighton, actually
have i missed something, but didnt the info come from someone at Ferrari? how come they havent been spanked, too? have the FIA given any reasons for the fine (and amount?)

let's see just how much the sponsors want to be involved now.. or do Mclaren have to carry the can themselves?

Having thought about this, it's a complete cop-out by the authorities. If the team have cheated then the team and the drivers should lose all their points and be fined. They should also be banned for the rest of the season from racing. Can you see the flaw in this argument???

Bunch of hypocritcal wankers want to hurt McClaren, placate Ferrari BUT keep the piblic's interest in the last 4 Grand Prix. Cake and eat it anyone?

Tis a shame, as presumably Hamilton / Alonso are benefitting from driving cars that have been sneakily enhanced by nicking technical data from Ferrari, thus gaining an unfair advantage. If Hamilton goes on to win the title, then through no fault of his own, there will be a small greasy stain on his achievement.

exactly yes, thats why I watch other forms of car racing where its alot more on driver vs driver as opposed to technical bollocks.

This opens up the whole championship to reverse company espionage.

Mr Mclaren employee decides to e-mail some documents to Mr Willams empoyee. Mr Mclaren employee's boss then finds out and contacts the FIA. FIA must then kick Williams out of the constructors as they have now set a precedent on what punishment you must take should you be found to have another teams documents.

We could see a 2007 championship where all teams finish on 0 points if the teams get clever about it. As usual the FIA have f***ed up. They're nearly as bad as the FA.

I now firmly believe that FIA stands for Ferrari Investigation Authority, and Max Mosley is more inept than Steve Mclaren.

Lastly, why have Coughlan and Stepney got away from this completely untouched, surely they should have been the first to take the wrap (a good punsihment being that neither of them are to work in an FIA governed sport for the rest of their careers!).

oh they are Hiney...much fitter!
What a load of crap. This idea that racing drivers are superhuman stems from one shit documentary featuring Coulthard on a treadmill.

It's a corrupt uncompetitive closed shop shitty sport. End of.

hahaha what little you know, yes I saw that documentary and there are racing drivers (not just F1 ya know) who easily outfit a pro football player. OK Mansell was'nt the fittest in his Prime but he'd still be able to beat all the current BHA players!

As Murray Walker said on R4's Today programme this morning, FIA stands for "Ferrari International Assistance"

According to the BBC website there were emails between De La Rosa and Alonso which discussed the data and how reliable it was (and therefore whether they could trust it), which suggests that they did something more than just 'receive' it...

Looking at this from an Italian perspective ...

I read a fantastic rant in an Italian newspaper yesterday. The whole thing is a conspiracy between Ecclestone and McLaren.

McLaren cheated. FACT. McLaren's drivers will still win the world championship. FACT. No-one cares about the Constructors' Championship. FACT. Letting Ferrari win that is a meaningless gesture, that protects McLaren. FACT. The fine will find its way back into the sport, via that crook, Ecclestone, who is pals with McLaren. FACT. McLaren will not suffer a thing. FACT.

It's a DISGRACE. Ferrari have been stitched up AGAIN.

FACTS. Every single one of them.

That's the sort of thing that makes me wish I could read Italian - no one does injustice and conspiracy quite like them, look at the theatrics every time a footballer gets booked. And the fallout from that World Cup match in 2002 they lost to (Korea?) was hilarious.

Have to admit though, I do think McLaren have got away with murder here. Even given the fact it is a team thing rather than driven by the individual drivers, they have been racing cars that have benefited from the technology.

The decision seems very similar in many respects to the Tevez one. Duck the really gutsy, correct decision (which would have been to throw them out of the drivers championship as well), and try and 'make up' for it with a huge fine.
