I was listening last night and I am ABSOLUTELY 100% sure that he did say 'inert' not 'inept.

Besides which, why call Knight inept when he could have singled out Jonesy, whose last 8 or so touches were all misplaced passes or poor control. Poor lad had a total nightmare (no pun intendeed)

But anyway - it was definitely 'inert'!

I disagree. There were three of us coming home in the car listening to the phone in and we all agree that MM said "Inept"

I think "inept" is being far too kind to Leons' performance last night. He was absolute rubbish and contributed nothing (and with Trev nursing a niggle, nut still giving 100%), except have a barney with nathan.

that's the tenth time he's been subbed this season so it can't have been a total suprose. And around me it seemd a popular decision

i am prepared to accept that he waas heavily marked but it was his general stroppiness with the rest of the team that annoyed me.

and the fact that he has only scored ONE goal from open play (ie - away from the penalty spot) since November!!!!!

Anyone got an Argus ? Maybe that carries the interview in the report, and we can clear this up.

I was standing less than 18 inches away from McGhee when he gave his interview to Hawsey

I taped the interview and transcribed it this morning.

I agree that hearing it once you can be forgiven for thinking it was "Inept" because of his scottish accent.

But continually replaying the quote proves beyond all doubt that he actually said "INERT".

Falmer Dream - you have it on tape - do as I did - listened to it more than once.

I remember that after a defeat at Scunthorpe in the promotion season, Adams was very scathing about the team.

Didn't he pick out Andy Crosby in particular, saying he'd substituted him to save him further embarrassment.

Leon is our best player but there is clearly a temperament problem linked to his maturity levels.

I couldn't improve on London Irish's post but I do think that maturity and temperament is at the root of Knight's problems with McGhee - and vice versa.

From the brief photographic encounter I've had with Leon Knight, I got the impression that the effect of "stardom" at an early age was sitting a tad uncomfortably on his shoulders. The shoulders that were bearing the weight of an increasingly expanding head! Some players have the maturity to cope with this - Bobby Zamora for example - but others need to be reminded they are still part of a team. need to follow team orders and are not indispensable. Despite him being charming and most amenable in front of a camera lens when I encountered him, I am not surprised to discover he has a tendency to get sulky.

McGhee doesn't strike me as a manager who is naturally given to publicly slagging off players and I'd rather think that this was a last resort. Made necessary by earlier, private "conversations" going in one sulky ear and straight out the other!

Also it's not just a players own performance that makes him inept/inert.

Knight was surrounded by between three - and on one occasion FIVE defenders when he got hold of the ball. And these are good solid defenders who haven't let in a lot of goals this season.

Anyone would have struggled, particularly a 5ft 3ins striker off his form who doesn't look like he likes the cold weather much.

You could call it inept/inert. You could also call it "marked out of the game"

Absolutely right Lush. Rather than moan about Knight I was more pissed off at the fact that with half the Brentford defence marking him, no one else managed to take advantage.

Oh, and for the record, I think MM was wrong to go public.

No he got Cork to do it. "Useless" was how Cameron was described at the time. Everyone was outraged at the time. Short and selective memories from most Albion fans

What do you mean "he got cork to do it"?
I'm sure corky didn't say anything he didn't want to say.

What a bizarre thread. Looks like McGhee's great crimes are:

1. Having a Scottish accent
2. Having a wider vocabulary than your average football manager

There's all the difference in the world between calling someone inert and inept. It would indeed have been a Glenn Hoddle-style outrage if he had describes one of his own players as inept, whereas "inert" seems to sum up Leon's performance nicely. (I wasn't at the game so can't be certain, but by all accounts he wasn't exactly threatening.)

It seems to me that McGhee is one of the more thoughtful, psychologically aware managers in the game. He certainly seems to take different approaches when dealing with different players, knowing (as Mike Brearley did) that what gets the best out of one person may do the reverse for someone else. I reckon MM's made it something of a pet project to coax the best out of Leon, as he's clearly the most talented senior player he has at his disposal. Taylor did the same with Bob, but then Bobby is a better footballer and more comfortable with the attention he receives on and off the pitch.

On the basis of Leon's recent performances, it's probably fair to say that McGhee's techniques, whatever they may be, have not worked particularly well so far. That doesn't necessarily mean they won't work in the future, and I still think MM will get the best out of Leon as the season goes on.

I would say inert was a reasonable description of Knights perfromance last night. He was constantly surrounded by defenders, Brentford worked really hard to contain him, and were highly effective. I think MM was just frustrated that Leon did not work harder to shrug off the attention he was getting form the bees defence. Which is fair enough comment.

I'm a big fan of Knight, and I think he comes in for some unwarranted criticism on this site re: diving etc. But last night MM was right to take him off as he was completely neutralised by brentford, and was not helping the team.

In this argument I think most people have a got a point. I think Leon could feel frustrated about the lack of service he gets from the midfield, but I do not think he should just shrug his shoulders and get the hump about it. He is a good enough player to go and do something about it, he has the talent to create space and chances for himself, and if no-one else is going to do it for him, maybe he should get on with it. I do think he should remember that he is a professional football player, and should have a professional attitude to match. At the moment, I do not think he has. I think MM is trying to remind of that with the substitution and mild public criticism.

If MM said inept then would be out of order, as that level of criticism is for the dressing room only. If however as Hawesy says it was inert then that was fair comment, and good on him.

I have played it several times to 2 other people. 1 is certain McGhee said "inept", the other thinks it may have been "inept" but isn't sure.

I've now heard it about 20 times. At first I was sure it was "inept" and quite a few people on here thought that's what he said. Now, given the explanations by RLZ and Andrew Hawes, I'm less sure. I guess they may be right, given McGhee's previous comments about the forwards' (lack of) movement and the comments he made straight after using the word yesterday.

Either way, it's just a very unfortunate mixture of an accent and a particularly crucial word that sounds like another.

"Inert" would accurately describe Knight's performance. "Inept" is probably too strong, but McGhee does seem to be running short of patience.

Whether it's inert or inept (I heard inept) the real issue is WTF has happened to Leon? He was simply not interested last night, a level of disinterest normally associated with players on the move.

I'm glad MM had the balls to sub him.

Moreover, I don't think anyone can accuse Mcghee of publicly criticising the players at this stage. His defence of Jones' performance was way over the top - I thought he was his usual crap self as did most of the crowd judging by the laughter and cheering at his substitution.

I've got to come down on Leon's side on this one. I think Leon is pissed off at the moment, this may be because.....

He's getting marked out of games and generally roughly treated by defenders/fans. This is because he is the divisions top scorer. He is not used to this and it is part of his learning curve.

He is probably frustrated because his career and ability to play his best/score as many goals as he could, is being hindered by playing in a team which favours the long ball and has little creativity.

His manager has on more than one occasion criticised him in the local press.

Now, I agree that a player should react to these things in a positive manner. To be honest though, I can't see that he's underperforming or looks more disinterested than the rest of the side. This has been greatly exaggerated on this thread. He certainly hasn't been bad enough to warrant public criticism from his manager.

Maybe he does think he should be playing for someone better. If i'm honest I think he would do well at a 1st division passing side
