Going back to the original point made by everyone's favourite reactionary: no, I don't suppose McCormick did apologise in court...but then I doubt it would have been the time or the place.
If you're a parent who's just lost your two kids, and seen your husband reduced to a shadow of his former self by someone who admitted drinking, driving and falling asleep at the wheel, is an apology in court really going to make any difference? People will just say it's the defendant trying to make himself look better. No apology will ever ease their pain anyway.
Perhaps in a few months time, when the dust has settled, he might write to them, if he can ever find the words to do it.
I just don't see what standing up in front of the cameras and pleading for forgiveness would have achieved apart from further upsetting grieving relatives. They'd never believe him anyway.
