But McClaren used to win everything

I don't think McLaren will be a disaster. I think Scolari would have been, however.

Best person of the shortlisted candidates was O'Neill, by a country mile.

But everybody keeps on going on about prior success, experience, etc, but why is that important? Other nations - the Netherlands and Germany, for instance - don't consider this important, so why should we? None of that is important - day-to-day coaching isn't the responsibility of international managers (the players' clubs do that). Their responsibility is choosing a good squad, a good team within that squad, organising them well, and getting them up for it. Personally, I think McLaren is good at that.

and good tactics, the ability to read the game and change the team........

My choice would have been Peter Taylor, with assistance from someone like Stuart Pearce. Taylor has international experience, he's also proved himself in the lower leagues, and I think having someone like Pearce in the background would garner respect from the players.
Coppell would also have been a quality choice, if only you could trust him not to bottle it. I wouldn't trust him not to walk out mid-qualification after a couple of crap results, instead of sticking at it.

As for McClaren, I'm sure he'll give a decent stab. And fall short. So not unlike every other England manager with the possible exception of Bobby Robson who rather stumbled into success at international level. The fact is that you could make a case for 4 or 5 British managers, but none of them really stand out. Screw Scholari - if they'd got their arses into gear, Hiddink was the man we should have brought in.

Surely you want someone proven. Taylor has never managed at the top level and Pearce only has a year (unless you count the debacle at Forest).

Nope, too much stock is placed on that IMO. All it does is restrict the pool from which to choose. Marco Van basten has no managerial European experience yet the least talented Dutch team for nearly 20 years (on paper) waltzed through the qualifying group under his management and look like a serious force again this time round. He's got an AZ Alkmaar stalwart at centre half in his first choice team FFS.

Closer to home, what had Jack Charlton done ANYWHERE before he managed EIRE? Or Rudi Voeller in Germany?

I don't know why everyone is getting so worked up. He is clearly the right man for the job.

He has coached within the England set up for the past 5 years. Will have been to 2 world cups and Euro 2004 as coach in that time, whilst being the first manager to bring in a trophy and a european run to Middlesbrough. Where he also was a key figure in implementing a succesful youth academy.

A totally predictable f***-up of a choice by the FA. They've copped out and taken the easy option - just bland, inoffensive yes-man to lead the national team. What a load of shit. We needed Allardyce to get hold of that team and drive out all the complacency that has built up over the last 5 years, with certain players assured of their place in the team regardless of form or fitness. Instead it'll just be more of the same.

We had the chance to freshen up the squad, bring in some new training methods, tactics, some new ideas, a new style of management. Under McLaren though, and with the rancid foul stench of Eriksson still stinking the place out, the team will just stagnate.

The one redeeming factor will be if Pearce is brought in amongst the coaching staff, he'll be a hell of a lot more use than the swedish slapheads sidekick "Tord Grip". Whatever the f*** HE was supposed to have done for the team I'll never know.

Point taken, but Voeller was very up and down (remember that 5-1!) and another example, Klinsman is doing a shite job. I'm not overly impressed with Pearce either. Certainly a motivator, someone you can respect but a tactician? I'm not convinced.

But he has managed to get Middlesborough to their worst league position for years, and more importantly IMO, just does not have any sort of character or personality, which is vital when trying to win over not only the fans but the press.

Well, being an Ireland fan, I don't give a sh!t what Stevie Staunton's personality is like. I just care whether he can coach the squad adequately and play them to their strengths.

Personality does not come into it. I guess that's why England perpetually Under-achieve whereas Ireland over-achieve.

I would have also preffered Alardyce but it is the conception that McClaren will make no changes that a disagree with. He will have his own ideas and make changes if he thinks they're the right thing to do. Besides if we win the world cup we may want someone who works like Sven! :jester:

Defoe just been on the TV saying all the players are pleased with the appointment and that he is a superb coach. Would have preferred allardyce myself and agree with that easy 10 said.
