The problem is people still hark on about the mythical 'creative central midfielder', which is something that you rarely see. The centre of midfield needs to be balanced, so a holding player is needed, which I would say is Thomson. I suspect Livermore is also likely to sit deeper. So you need somebody that is going to get forward and support the forwards with late runs, which Hammond did. The fact that Hammond was decent enough at winning the ball, taking it forward and doing that rare thing that Albion midfielders struggle with, passing it to team mates, was, well a bonus.

Players like him are hard to replace and we have not done it, it is just that Albion fans are too short sighted to realise that he was quality, we have not replaced him and will struggle to do so.

You really don't need to be THAT good to get out of this division. Jesus, we nearly made the Playoffs last season without really being much cop most of the time.

As long as you're well organised and not shipping goals, you just need someone up the other end scoring regularly and bobs yer knob. As it stands, we'll probably need a bit of luck to steer clear of injuries for our two main strikers as there's not much in reserve there (although even then, Virgo could certainly do a job). But I think overall Adams has added enough to the squad to make us decent candidates for the top 6.

This division is khazi.

There is no way we have the creativity to score enough goals to mount a promotion push.

Did you watch any Div 1 football last year? None of the sides had very much genuine creativity. And it's possible to make a case that it's even weaker this year.

We've got a good squad and could always do with more players but I don't think we'll fail to get promoted through lack of creativity.

When he was good, he was great, and at times, carried the team. But when he was not good, he was anonymous - a phrase used by many people at the time.

I know one of his roles was bombing forward and supporting the strikers, and he sometimes did this really well, but there were others times when - for no apparent reason - he just didn't do this.

To me, he was one of Brighton's more infuriating players - you knew he could do it, but were scratching your head as to why sometimes he didn't.

I think last season, at times where some were accusing his of being anonymous, that was partly down to the fact that him and O’Callaghan did not work together. O’Callaghan was neither a holding player or one that got forward, he seemed to get in Hammond’s way. There were times where Hammond was carrying him, yet people got on Hammond’s back, rather than O’Callaghan’s.

Both livermore and mcleod score goals. I think, if anything, we have more of a chance of scoring with the current midfield. Also, with stability in the centre, Cox will hopefully be given more freedom to get forward down the centre where his skills are more varied than cutting inside

Fair point. There is a bit of that, though I never really rated O'Callaghan, and I was for dropping him rather than Hammond.

Not from me, he won't. I just hope we mark him properly at corners..

I think the only thing the current squad possibly lacks from the last two that got promoted is a player in the centre like Carpenter. All the other ingredients are there though. A good blend of youth and experience, a solid keeper (shut up - he is), commanding centrebacks, good fullbacks who support coming forward, what looks like a decent winger, and (unlike 2002 and 2004) we've got TWO strikers who can find the net regularly instead of one.

Thats a squad that should be there or thereabouts come May. And one thing you know about Adams - he will have them fit, well organised and motivated. So we havn't got a Deco in the centre of the park - I still reckon we've got MORE than enough there for an assault on the top 6.

We do NOT, and I repeat NOT, need a backup goalie.

Having Sullivan for the bench, should Micky choose to use him will bemore than enough cover. We don't want to be spending money paying another clubs keeper to warm our bench. If FDM gets injured during a game, Sullivan will need to play the remainder of the game. I can guarantee that within 48 hours we'd have a top goalie on loan from another teams reserves cos other clubs would be happy to get their sub goalie playing some games and off the wage bill!

However I still think we need a decent backup striker

If we are there or thereabouts come January and building of some description has started at Falmer we will have no trouble attracting loanees as it will be obvious that we are once again an attractive proposition for the type of players we are gonna need, if however we are struggling and Falmer suffers a further delay..........

This is a genuine question:
How much better is the current team to last season's?
Last season:
--------------------kuipers-----------------------
Whing-------Elphick-------Lynch-----Richards
Cox--------Raccon-------Thomson----Westlake
-------------Murray------Forster------------------

This season:
---------------Kuipers-----------------------------
Whing------Elphick-------Lynch----------Richards
Cox----------Thomson-----Livermore------Mcleod
-------------Murray--------Forster-----------------

It seems about the same to me? Are our options from the bench significantly better?

Its 'about the same' as that's how you want to present it. Your 'last season' team contains three loanees, one of whom only played FOUR [?] games. Also contains Thomson and Murray, who were only here for half of that season. For half of the year the first choice up front was Revell or Savage.

And yes, the strength on the bench IS significantly better.
