Nobody on here knows the background to Ryan losing his place in the team, but we could all see there was a keeper that wasn't doing a great job at keeping, hence he was dropped. It happens.

Having been an automatic choice for several years, and wanting to maintain an International place, I suspect he did not react well to this. Resulting in GP completely binning him off. If thats how it played out then GP would have my full backing.

Just blindly saying RYAN MUST STAY AND PLAY is nonsense. You don't know what went on. Sanchez has looked the part and deserves to keep his place. The backup keeper is always a graveyard shift, and probably not one Ryan thinks is worthy of him, so its probably best he pops off.

Except thats not what I said.

Never did I say he should be starting before Sanchez but the fact he couldn't even get on the pitch vs Newport is rubbish.

If he's out of form how exactly does he get back into form if he's never playing?

As we aren't told why he's not been getting a look in then there can't be any complaints if fans start asking questions.

It can't simply be because he's out of form because Dan Burn has been getting in the squad and he's overall been utter crap So being crap is apparently acceptable to Potter

It seems that Potter has been pretty clear with both Ryan, and the fans (via his press conferences) what the situation is. In the press conference before the Sheffield United match, Potter is reported (in Australia) as saying:-

.. On the one hand, we're saying that we're going to give Rob a chance and an opportunity and you want to give him that time. ..

and the same passage reported more fully in the Argus:-

.. On the one hand we are saying we are going to give Robert an opportunity and him and Jason (Steele) have done well, Jason has done well as a No.2, and you are going to give him that time. ..

And at the end of last month, it was reported in Australia that Ryan himself says he was told by Potter that Sanchez would be given a run of games, with Steele as the back-up.

Ryan knows exactly where he stands (which is all you can ask from your manager). Potter, quite simply, clearly hasn't been impressed by Ryan and wants to give Sanchez a good look.

Neither Potter, nor the club, have done anything wrong whatsoever, as far as I can see

It's fine to give Sanchez a chance, but for Ryan just to be pushed out like that to the point where Steele is now in front of him looks poor.

Ryan knows where he stands but Potter hasn't said a single thing as to why he's basically pushing him out of the club.

Doesn't sound one bit like he's even allowing him to compete for the #1 spot.

It does seem strange going from first choice and a key part of the team for three and a half years to being down in fourth spot. I'll be amazed if he ever plays for us again. It's a bit of a sad way for his career with us to end.

I'll be interested to hear whatexactly has happened once he's left.

I don't think the club all of a sudden think he's our fourth best keeper. It's just that he and the club are of the view that he deserves first team football, and he's no longer going to get that here (barring injury/illness). So, both he and the club want to find him another club, ergo his head is elsewhere.
The rationale for Steele remaining as sub keeper has been extremely well laid out on here.

Again, he's been a cracking servant, but he's no longer the kind of keeper we require, whereas Sanchez has undoubted talent, the goalkeeping qualities we need, and in the small number of first team outings has demonstrated that he's taking to the role. This will not be undermined by the odd error (which will come -- he's 23, very young in goalkeeping terms).

What utter ********s the club have been.Paying him all that money while allowing him to move.

Not exactly a rush of new job offers coming in.

What an absolute load of rubbish.

Ryan is better than Steele. If Sanchez gets injured you want your next best PL keeper in the game.

Not some third stringer.

That he didn't even make the Newport game squad speaks volumes of how he's being pushed out of the club.

It doesn’t. It’s of no benefit to to Ryan to be no 2, he’s not a sub keeper.

It’s fairly obvious he’s kicked up a fuss about it or there has been some major falling out, I don’t see how it’s poor from the club personally, I certainly can’t imagine he took it well, being dropped for a total unknown, that is. And that along with the Maupay falling out earlier in the season.

Will always have great memories of him but when his times done, Ryan strikes me as the sort of guy who would be more insulted by playing against Newport than not at all, and that doesn’t reflect badly on him you can understand it to a degree.

In addition to your comments and reasons as to why Maty Ryan has not been selected I refer to Alex Ferguson’s handling of Peter Schmeichel during Man Utd’s treble winning season of 1998/9. Around February (I believe) of that season Fergie made Schmeichel take a three week holiday. I’m not sure of the reason why - maybe PS was getting stale or a drop in form or to solve a private domestic matter. Whatever, Schmeichel came back totally refreshed and helped United win that historic treble.

The point is that Potter knows a damn sight more than us and is astute enough to know the best way to handle Ryan’s situation. Hopefully Ryan, like Schmeichel, will make it back into the side refreshed and raring to go.

Obviously, we don't know the ins and outs but - like others on this thread - I'm not convinced either Ryan or the club has to be in the wrong here: it's part of football, isn't it? The relationship between the management and a player presumably evolves over time according to a changing set of circumstances on both sides (if indeed it's that polarised). The players obviously have a responsibility to themselves and their families via the success of their career, and the management to the Board/owner via the success of the club. Sometimes it's going to look harsh on a player, but in the end surely it's just the way football works. I'm a big fan of Maty Ryan, I should say, but obviously it's the Albion first and foremost, every time. And for me, that means backing the manager if it seems to be bringing results.

[emoji106] exactly.

Why can’t people grasp this?

If you’re a coach trying to build morale, why would you include a guy who has his mind set on leaving involved in match squads, build up etc. We want Sanchez to be number one, let’s build him up.

Seems fairly obvious to me.

The club / Potter are under absolutely no obligation to explain why Ryan is no longer being picked for the squad. Neither are the club complaining that fans are asking questions. We can all draw our own conclusions that there's probably been some kind of bust-up behind the scenes after he was dropped from the team, which means "playing his way back into form" is not the issue now. It would appear he's burnt his bridges here, and its now best for all parties for him to move on.

I don't know why you have such a bee in your bonnet over this. Players who want assured 1st team football move on all the time once they're out of favour, its nothing new.

I think I understand now. it’s because this poster’s in Australia.

Have seen similar sentiments on social media from Aussies who are upset Matty’s no longer number 1.

I loved our Aussie contingent (particularly Mooy), and It’s tricky but what can you do. I’d ask those who are so upset about this, why do you not feel the same about the club phasing out Murray, Dale, Duffy? It’s the same principle. This is not a charity organisation. This is elite sport. The managers job’s on the line. The club is on the line with the threat of relegation.

The club have to do what they feel is right and act in the best interests of Brighton.

Ryan was fortunate to keep his place in the second half of last season, and certainly very lucky to retain his place for so long at the start of this. He's past his peak now and it's time to cash in on whatever value he still retains. He was never a top Premier League goalkeeper but he was perfect for what we needed having arrived. A big character and a solid keeper for the first couple of seasons but now the squad has moved on. He'll be fondly remembered, but his time has passed.

The test here is, what happens to Matty now.

If the club are wrong, there’ll be a host of Premier League clubs after Matty. I suspect that won’t be the case.

Doesn’t tell the whole story of course, but it does indicate something. I’m sure the guy will find somewhere in Europe, a great pro and a decent keeper.

I'm definitely not a bandwagon jumper - and I posted on here straight after lockdown that his performances were not good enough in my opinion. While I don't feel vindicated for what has been a great servant I don't think we need a big inquest. It is what it is, we have one of the countries best young GK coaches and a decent manager - if they decided between them we need to make the change then so be it.

Maty Ryan as Australian #1 is not really saying much, given the quality of the Aussies...

Matty boy was never good enough for Valencia. Gary Neville has even said that, he just never made the grade there and couldn't force his way into being first choice keeper despite banging down the door to management. Which made it all the more strange that he signed for us in the first place.

It's clearly Matt's choice to not play second fiddle. Good luck to him. I guarantee he won't play first choice for a bigger or better club than Brighton.

Ryan was great for us but with the higher line we need a bigger keeper. Simple as. And if we move on, we really move on. Ryan might even have been offered the beech spot but declined, we don't know.

What I'm fairly sure of is that if Sanchez gets injured Ryan will be back.
