Surely it matters to us because we know £80m+ could potentially fund a replacement of similar quality? Also, for a club that’s been so close to oblivion, big fees that secure the future can only be good. I’d rather he didn’t leave even for £150m - but keeping a player that good long term just looks all but impossible.
That's fine if you've got most of the summer to bring in a replacement. Not so fine if you've got about 5 frantic days at the end of January!

Can't help but feel if we have £20m to spend we could buy 3 young up and coming players for a similar amount. £20m on just one player is just not our style (yes, we have spent that on Webster) but would prefer to spend it on emerging talent personally.

It would be unusual for emerging talent to go straight into the first team squad. Even for us.

LB cover and CB , seems sensible.

No idea what he plays like but I do think we could be quicker at the back with the ball , zip it around a bit more and push with pace when gaps appear. We are good but deffo an area we can improve. If he is a RDZ player then assume he fits this type

Brighton factually.....

This is vital and clearly he is and has worked with him, therefore one would like to think, that is half the battle knowing how the manager wishes to play.

And Cucurella, Estupinan , and Mwepu . (c £15m admittedly) - it’s the age here that’s slightly different. 26 as opposed to 22/23 for an experienced top flight player.

Not totally convinced by this guy reading around on the net. Technically good and fast. But short and not that physical. Aside from Martinez these type of players don't usually do that well in the epl.

Seems like Ajax were interested last summer as a replacement for Martinez but they went with the hapless bassey instead.
That’ll do for me - sign him up!

Possible replacement for Webster or someone in to bolster the ranks a bit? If the figures are to be believed then £26m is a lot of money for a club like us to spend on a bench player.

I do love our policy of buying and nurturing young and relatively unknown talents but there is a lot to be said for buying highly rated players in their prime.

There’s a case for that but equally buying ready made experience also has a place too. He’s left footed, good on the ball and knows the system and coach so makes sense to me. Also having some one older reduces the risk of being poached if they’ve just signed a 4-5 year contract, so adds some stability

Where is it documented (the original sauce?) that de Zerbi is so keen on singing Matvienko as some posters are mentioning? All that I have seen are some articles or tweets where the simple 1+1=2 logics is applied (de Zerbi + Shakhtar + wants his own signings = must be possibly a ball-playing left-sided versatile defender from Ukraine).

Let me be clear, I have never seen him play (sure, we all possibly have - for Ukraine or some random UCL match but unless you are Swanny you are not able to analyze 22 players simultaneously)... he may be a good signing but I have also seen players with similar European competition experience that wouldn't be good enough for a top half Premier League side.

you know full well a club would never openly discuss their targets , even more so one contracted to other clubs - so if you need a quote from RDZ or Weir you might as well ignore all transfer threads

I didn’t realise you were talking just about this transfer window. Thought you meant the fees in general.
