Would be a useful player for a team like man u or Liverpool. Can't see him bothering with a mid table battle.

What would be really useful would be insight from someone who has actually seen him play recently… have his legs gone?

Won't let myself get too excited but this would be a huge coup.

He was Dortmund's stand out defender last season and by all accounts should have been in the Germany squad for the Euros, Nagelsmann didn't bring him as he was worried he'd be a 'bad traveller', i.e not great for the squad if not the XI..

He played every minute of their CL campaign, scored in the semi against PSG. If this happens, he's straight into our best eleven - anyone suggesting otherwise needs their head checking

He is looking not for money and not even glory as I understand it, just wants to play abroad and probably play as much as he can.
Like I said earlier in the thread, this can't be ruled out. It would probably a great signing, he was very good last season and people were surprised he didn't go to the Euros.

But this might be the case here mightn't it?

Presumably at the expense of Van Hecke? But it could be Dunk

Fab might want/need another centre back, and there was talk of another 'experienced pro' coming in. This could answer both of those. Although its not the profile of centre back I thought we'd go for.

Some reports that he's rejected a move to Bologna in the last few days.

Well, I'm glad that people are asking the relevant question: which one of Dunk or Van Hecke would you leave out to accommodate Hummels? Because:
1, he will expect to play every minute
2, can't see FH playing three at the back (although I might be proved wrong on it, but still doubt it'll be the case)

Recent examples of Man City (and now Arsenal) show that playing four centre backs in defence can work! Maybe it solves our right back issue if Van Hecke moves across a bit....?

Go on ... who you leaving out ? because he will expect to start.
We might play 3 CBs and I fancy Igor will leave if this signing happens. I agree it seems unlikely you are benching Dunk or Van Hecke but you can't rule it out. Hummels is top class and if have the chance to sign him you have to take it IMO.

This to me would suggest the boss wants to play 3 at the back. Hummels would be a quality addition and allow us to do that.

We don’t have 3 outstading centre half’s at the moment to allow us to play that formation with any confidence IMO.

Igor and Webster are not good enough I’m afraid.

Anyone. He'd be our best defender?
answer the question.... hes clearly not going to leave Dunk out... who is our best defender.

And if he were to partner him with Dunk I am not sure that works, but what do i know.

Even in a 3 Hummels would have to play central of those i would imagine, and Dunk cannot play IMO left or right side of a 3

We need an extra CB - it’s a long season, injuries, giving Fab options. Nice problem to have. Issue is does he want to retire or do one or two more season working in the PL with a coach like Hurzeler. Maybe…

With a new, exciting, German coach and an existing relationship with Dortmund, this makes an interesting possibility.
