I go coarse fishing quite a lot. Have been to numerous places around Sussex including the Ouse. My dad is a member of Haywards Heath Distrct Angling Society. Btw, has anyone ever been to swanbrough lakes in Kingston? I've fished there regularly for years.

Of course all of the rivers round here have sea trout in them at the right times of the year. When I used to commute to London we used to see a bloke fly fishing for sea trout just above the norfolk bridge at Shoreham (early morning at low tide).

I've heard of sea trout to 11lb being caught in the Adur, almost certainly illegally though; and a friend of mine caught one at Shoreham harbour whilst fishing for sole on red rag.

Have seen a few big sea trout whilst fishing by the railway bridge for mullet. They jump out of the water infront of you. Also seen quite alot in the evenings around Kingston Beach area. I caught one on Worthing Pier about 10 years ago, only weighed 1lb 10oz ..... was returned . :bigwave:

I guess they look quite different to Bass in the water. This thread really has got me wanting to go out Bass fishing now!

I recently got into Wild Fishing with Henry Gilbey on one of the Sky channels... that bloke has fished some amazing places, and caught some beautiful Bass... and I also caught Fishing Road Trip USA (with the old scottish geezer), and he went fishing for Striped bass off Maine.. they are even more spectacular than our Bass, growing up to 40lb. He pointed out the oddly, we have the same conditions as they do, but for some reason we don't get the striped bass... shame

You can tell bass and sea trout apart quite easily in the water once you see them. Often inside the East Arm at Brighton Marina during the summer you see a few sea trout near where the boats fill up with fuel. The sea trout in there look ill (not surprising with all the diesel/petrol slicks on the surface) as they rarely move much and you can get to within a few feet of them on the jetties.

are the ones in there cut off from the sea?

Strange how you can catch Sea trout when they arrive in our rivers but never catch them on the coast just before they come in. Surely they take a worm on their way in but I have never heard of them being caught off the beach or piers.

Went there for the first time this summer and did a 48 hour stint there for a little competition we have between a few mates.

I like the fact that you virtually fish from the back of your car and there's a good mix of fish in there too....plus it's only up the road from me.

Well my friend caught 1 off the West arm at Shoreham on red rag, so that's pretty much the sea...

I'm not absolutely sure but I believe sea trout returning up river to spawn are like salmon insomuch as they don't feed at all on their way up river and it is their territorial curmudgeonness (non-word) that makes them atttack a fly or a lure.

All this talk about fishing and the brighter weather has got me nursing a semi, some light tackle trotting for mullet on the Adur is definitely in order.

I think the main difference is that Sea Trout live in and around the same estuary all of their lives, whereas Salmon are 'seafaring'... they both need to go upstream to spawn.

I found it very difficult getting through the tiddlers to tell you the truth. But i've only been there once and really need to have a good go this summer.

As i say, only went there once and that was for a competition with a few mates that usually ends in alcoholic coma :smokin: Had a 13lb carp off the top in the speci lake though so that was nice.

I used to go carping at Wylands sometimes for 4 days at a time every month....4 days = 4 crates of beer !!!

Only do it once a year now.

I've scaled all my tackle right down...out went the snobbery of Shimano and Fox etc and in came Kingfisher and shakespere and not only do i still catch as many fish, but it only takes one trip to get my stuff to the pond rather than 4 trips with a huge trolly !!!

I feel like a born again angler.

Maybe we should organise a NSC fishing get together in the summer?
