Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but anyone found good places to stay in Marseille? Some good Airbnb places available but a bit expensive. By the way for anyone not yet booked flights and not coming from the south coast, I managed to get £30 tickets from Stansted to Nimes which is a little over an hour away by train. Did involve a 3 night stay and just a small bag though!
We have a spare sofa bed in our Air BNB in Marseile, the Wednesday & Thursday night if you are happy to chip in a bit🙂

Hey guys !!

Sorry I've been a bit AFK - vacations. Sorry also for the AEK match...

We are undergoing a major crisis. But that's Marseille, happens roughly every three years. In present circumstances, a draw in Amsterdam is a good result for us.

The match against you might already be decisive. If we win you would be in much worse shape than you could imagine (trust me on this ... I know way too well what happens in European groups when you have 0/6). If you win we're in a bad shape especially in those major crisis times. My money would be on us throwing away the away game against Paris and focusing on the EL match.

To answer a passing by question, and to make a point, la Joliette area is ok. Completely ok by daytime, okish at night time. Not exciting but ok. You have a few bars around there, and I'd advise you to call them right now if your plan is to go there after the match. Right. They might want some good business or ... not. While Marseille is not the shades someone who have lived in Marseille here describes, there are indeed some sensitive areas. Some of those close to la Joliette (métro stations Desiree Clary and further north should outright be avoided). The walk from St Charles to La Joliette is very meh. Take the metro, especially at night.
I'm sad you've been theoretically banned from the Vieux Port area. But anyway like I sayed before this is mainly a touristic area. While le panier is more interesting the local feel about it tends to fade away.

Oh and yes.... in France any 18+ citizen HAS to have a valid ID at any time. That's law. There are some controls (especially in Paris or if you look young or if you're smoking illegal stuff or if you look like a drunk English during an European League match etc...). You could (and it happens) be escorted to the police station if you don't have an ID. There's no real reason to at least have a British ID with you (that should be enough unless you happen to really piss off an officer). The guys interested in your wallet are not interested in your passport. Just keep both separated, even in case of pickpocketting it would do the trick... shaddy guys here want fresh and easy money. Not your passports or your souls ...

Cheers !
Mon dieu, tu fais ressembler la belle française à Vichy France. Je tenterai ma chance sans papiers!

Bon chance Mon ami!

I don't know if it is too expensive for you or if they still have rooms, but the Toyoko Inn was £169 for two nights and near to Place de la Joliette where we have to pick the tickets up from. I did it through booking.com
Thanks for the suggestion.

Russ "Hardest Geezer" Cook runs daily marathons through an African warzone in ridiculous temperatures and humidity.

cunning "other Hardest Geezer" fergus wanders round a tourist site in the South of France without his papers.

Mon dieu indeed.

I'm returning from Marseille to Gatwick on Fri 6th on easyJet EZY8440 landing at 12.20

I've just spotted there is a train strike on that day, and I'm struggling to get home to Bognor.

Is anyone else from NSC on that flight who I can grab a lift with to anywhere near Bognor?

p.s. Does anyone know if the strike means no trains at all, or just a severely reduced service?

Have you tried National Express? They may not get you to Bognor, but they should get you close by

Thanks for that suggestion @Stumpy Tim. I hadn't considered National Express as my default is always the train.

Searching a bit more on the internet it appears that on Fri 6th it is the RMT on strike which shuts down the underground.

Southern don't seem to be on strike, only taking industrial action and are stating it will be an amended timetable with fewer services running. And that an amended timetable for 6th Oct will be released on Sat 30th Sept.
So I'll wait and look again on Saturday to see what trains are expected to run.

Major item on this evening’s France 2 TV news: outbreak of bed bugs on the seats of the Paris - Marseille TGV (!!!)

In case anyone one is still arranging travel and looking at flying through Montpellier - I can offer a lift to one or two people from Montpellier to Marseille on the morning of Wednesday 4th and back on Friday 6th

I’m arsed :lolol:

They’re no real secret and come up quite quickly in searches. They fit the bill for what we need and have good reviews.

I miss seafood and especially shell fish so plan to smash my way through as much as possible.
Make sure it’s fresh or you can get violently sick !

It’s happened a few times. Once in San Fran and another in Ireland. Ireland was particularly bad, projectile vomiting and bursting a load of blood vessels around my eyes.

Gattuso getting the Marseille job. What an epic match up Vs de zerbi !! Wonder if they get on? Could be riots in and out of the stands.
I think they get on fine. In a 'when we're not being Italian managers in opposite dugouts' kind of way.

This was the Foggia Pisa play-off which got feisty after Gattuso got hit by a bottle. I'd love to know what RDZ was saying at this point, he was quite animated if you watch it. Probably 'stop walking round with that bag on your head, you're just winding up the crowd more and you look like a tit'.

But the rest of the time is all good, no?

What I LOVE about this especially as someone who has spent some money going to the game is that RDZ will be extra fired up now

I am intrigued enough to ask what happens to a team that has 0/6 ?
