Practice EVERYTHING in training over and over again - food, kit, hydration, electrolyte balance, uphill walking, sh*tting in hedges etc. For events more than say 6-7 hours, I'd say nutrition is the most important - get it wrong and the whole thing can become miserable. Finally, keep speedwork in your training programme -vitally important.

This and This. Practice makes perfect!

This. Anyone who can do a marathon can do 50k, and even 50 miles. Practice EVERYTHING in training over and over again - food, kit, hydration, electrolyte balance, uphill walking, sh*tting in hedges etc.

The ultrarunning community is brilliant - hugely friendly, almost no-one is stressed about times and all very supportive

You did that in a hedge in Hove Park and still got a sub 20 5k? Respect.

2016 is the year of the London/Brighton double.

Good luck - did them on consecutive weekends in 2013. Messed up my pacing (AGAIN) at London by setting off way too fast but overall it wasn't as difficult as I expected. Two finishing times were within 3 mins of each other.

I think I'll have to see how I feel on the day (for London). I'm aiming for 3:45 around Brighton, and if I get that, I might be more inclined to treat London as an opportunity to soak up the atmosphere.

Updated for me, #39 done today, Arun River Marathon (27.3 miles) in about 4.30. Tough old run from Littlehampton Marina, up the river to Amberley then on the SDW to Kithurst Hill, turn round and run back - hard underfoot (uneven), a massive hill but the rest flat and too hot second half. Next up SDW100......gaaaaaaaah.

Well done. Massive hill? You're making me feel over the hill.
My pleasure yesterday was going past a Centurion T shirt in the last stages of the Park Run. Meant I didn't lose to an Ultra 2 weeks running.

#8 for me yesturday, North downs way 50. Tough but a beautiful course.. box and reigate hills both seemed like the steapest climbs ive ever done. .. took a couple of wrong turns with other runners.. half a mile each which wasnt much of a problem, just a bit of map reading was needed!.. Just annoyed that i lost a few places and prob time. Strangely dont think getting a bit lost added any distance to the race, but talking to people at the end..most garmins and whatnots said 51.5 miles! Cruel, when the brain is set for 50, and around the corner is ANOTHER bl**dy field, not the finish!

Having not recced the course beforehand def gives you a disadvantage, but its all an education i guess and gives you a bit mental strength as not really knowing whats coming can be quite tough.

Great day, great weather, great ice cream, brilliantly oganised, great support, great trails! 69th 09:54:00 pb at 50 miles. Oh and seemed to have got a sdw50 finishers medal!
