Oh well that's alright then. He must be the greatest player if he got away with it
Time to let it go and not use one cheating incident to decide he wasn’t all that. Most top international strikers/midfielders/ defenders cheat, this was just a high profile one that MIGHT have screwed England over. No guarantee we were winning that game.

Please don’t tell me that you are a big Harry Kane fan when he plays for England, that would be quite hypocritical

He wasn't all that purely because he was a CHEAT. I cannot understand why people are so willing to overlook that.
Did Pele cheat? What about Cruyff? Best? Puskas? I am not aware that they did so why compare someone who did cheat to them?
Nope, I cannot stand Harry Kane.

Cheating or opportunism?

Regardless, not as good as Pele anyway.

Nobody has mentioned Eusebio, he’d be in a top 10 for me.

There will always be "buts"

For example, how good would Ronaldo, Messi and Pele have been if they were off their tits on illegal drugs?

Who knows?
Cocaine ? And still won World Cup and 2 league titles for Napoli. It’s not performance enhancing !!

Well, was he the greatest footballer ever?

Ignore all the obvious “yes buts” this is just a question about his footballing skills.

For me neither Ronaldo or Messi come close

Not Pele or Cruyff either

Some of these dribbles, twist, turns and nutmegs defy belief and some serious attempts at gbh on him too

For me YES. Played in an era where they could smash you to bits and still won a World Cup and Napoli’s first championship titles. I believe a UEFA cup as well. Can’t say pele as all we’ve ever seen is highlights and he only ever played in Brazil/USA. I love Ronaldo and Messi but the protection they get is unreal compared to Maradonas day.

One of very few players who got the ball and you think something may happen every time (and it did against England).

No, but he was the flairiest great.
Always a bit of some off field or on field controversy.
Working class.
Substance abuse.
Got into fights.
Him going to Napoli was a bit like Keegan going to Newcastle, a top talent to a big club that didnt win stuff. Only Napoli actually won trophies with him.
Personally, I think Zidane was a better all round footballer than Maradonna, Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldinho, but not as much of a show off or as gifted at dribbling.

I'm intrigued as to why everybody says Pele was the business when, truth be told, we never really saw that much of him, did we? Yes, we've all seen his World Cup highlights – and there's no doubt he was a top, top, top, top, top player – but is that all we're going on?

I was disappointed with the movie about him, which didn't show enough footage of him with the ball at his feet imo. To imagine him playing on the flat "carpet" pitches we have here now and without the physical assaults of the game back in that era - he'd be better than Ronaldo and Messi, for sure.
This is so true. Better protection from refs too. And huge leaps in drugs as well.
