To be fair, can't really base my opinion on one incident.

No, that wouldn't be fair.

But you could base it on the caution he accepted in 2008 for assaulting a woman in a pub?

Or on the ABH charges he's facing in Newcastle Crown Court in October, accused of glassing a bloke in the face? Not proven guilty yet, of course.

Or the fight he got in with Charles N'Zogbia after a late tackle?

Or the time he was sent home from England U21 duty because he broke a curfew and went out one night before an important game?

Or just on the moment when he broke Taylor's jaw because his ex, yes that's his EX, not his current, started sending Taylor texts. Newcastle supposedly put pressure on Taylor not to press charges because they didn't want to be seen as any more of a circus than they already are. I have heard it suggested by a Geordie friend that Taylor is known as a bit of a twat up that way, but if any of us punched a colleague hard enough to break his jaw (and your own hand) then you'd be out of a job in the blink of an eye.

Even Newcastle fans laughed last season when there was a suggestion of Carroll being picked by Capello. If he drops Terry as captain because he poked another player's ex, then he surely can't square that with picking a player awaiting trial for assault and with a reputation for using his fists to solve arguments.
