No, not a prospective signing. I just happened to spot this in the news about a 14 year old at Man United who is apparently one of the most sought after youngsters in Europe, with Barcelona after him amongst others. His name is JJ Gabriel.

They say footballing talent is often inherited through the genes, in which case JJ's mother must have been incredible. Because I've just discovered that his Dad is somebody who might well appear in a few people's Worst Albion XIs of all time.

Just for fun, and with no Googling: have a guess! :D

A Google triggered a vague recollection of the name. I would have been here until eternity if I couldn't Google.

I have never heard of his dad tbh.
For a while in the early 2000s, I wish I hadn't either.

I imagine there will be plenty who haven't heard of him: he didn't play many games for us, essentially because he was awful.

I looked now, and seriously...Get in the f***ing sea.

Gabriel's family has played a crucial role in his development, managing his career with superstardom in mind. His father....., changed the family's surname to Gabriel, making him more brandable.

Yep. This is the world we live in. Then again that kid Dembele at Celtic was all over the papers as the next big thing at 14 years old, and last time I looked, he was playing for QPR.

It's not to say he's failed as a footballer, of course he hasn't. But a lot of the "next Ronaldo" types turn out to be not so special once they have to play with adults.

I also had to Google.

You say awful, Wiki says "full international"

I see your Dembele and raise you Ansu Fati (and at 16, pre-injury, he WAS incredible)

Yeah, but with some nations their qualification standard criteria seems to be "has a passport and once played two games for Arsenal reserves".
