the local mayors who flip between asking for more restrictions but less depending who they're talking to?

i gather there is money kciking in for v.high tier (not for high tier), its just mayors want more, and more control, because thats what poltical leaders do.

Believe I read somewhere it’s £2 a head if you go into tier 3 and £1 tier 2.

On each of his three points

a) All you fans of the Swedish approach need to take a note of this. There will still be physical distancing, hand hygiene (although how anyone could object to that is beyond me), mask wearing, shielding and self isolating.

If to was to happen in this country the government would have to take charge of taking care of anyone shielding by feeding them, giving them access to essential services and paying them to not go to work. On current form I can't see our government being capable of that.

b) We are nowhere near being able to do this with our test and trace. The pause in the Summer was wasted.

c) Fair point.

In summary had the country spent the last few months preparing for the winter I would agree with this approach but we didn't so lockdown and restrictions might be the only way forward.

Local mayors should have zero say in the matter. It's either a local public health matter or it's not

What happens now that Manchester mayor Andy Burnham rejects Govt tier 3 imposition?

Boris says ok then or does someone have the balls to impose national law?

Should Manchester have a referendum for independance?

As far as I was aware, the UK doesn't have a federal state system.

I left the UK in 2003 but seem to have missed this new Mayoral power thing.

They used to be fat, wear a big chain around their necks and do f**k all apart from attend functions. (And in Brighton, get driven around in a Rolls Royce with reg CD1.

Anders Tegnell, the guy bossing corona in Sweden, says its unfortunately obvious that a second wave is now striking parts of Europe and that several countries (Germany, Denmark, Netherlands and a couple of others) likely will see April levels of deaths in the coming months. Say what you want about the Swedish strategy so far but most of his predictions have been spot on.

Also referencing hospital capacities, my cousin works at Worthing hospital and says the hospital is still very quiet and the COVID patients they do have at the moment are normally inpatients and not requiring the intensive care beds they needed in April. Would be interesting to here from [MENTION=206]Marshy[/MENTION] who I believe works in a hospital (Lewes?)

This is not a pop at you, but a genuine observatuon. Why is it that people make comments like this, when it backs up their own point of view, while the rest of the time they believe the authors are wrong.

They quote fact so how can it not be spot on? If it’s an opinion I would agree, but that’s natural, people side with opinions that back their own. That thread isn’t opinions, it’s fact checking all of the scare stories there is going about, which I’ve highlighted before.

That article is so full of utter shit, I'm not even going to waste my time picking it apart but, in short, most of the supposed claims they attempt to be debunking are not claims made by anyone of any note I am aware of.

I will, however, pick one bit from the top:

In fact, only on Thursday Liverpool's Aintree University Hospital revealed that it has already fitted 40 beds with ventilators and a further 30 beds with specialist CPAP breathing equipment.​

So, in short, the Mail are advocating taking resources away from other health concerns to treat Covid-19 patients should the need arise. Hasn't "focus on Covid-19 and ignoring other conditions" been one of your complaints? Are you now advocating that approach?

what crippling lockdown? half the country? some pubs and social business will be restricted further, cant meet in other peoples houses in 3 cities. as usual Mail screams scares stories. what they could report is how well the restrictions are in containing the worst effects of the virus.
