Likewise but then we eat freezer left overs three times a week anyway. Just mass cook at weekends when the kids are here. I somewhat suspect it's those that can't cook that might suffer .... you know ....those that keep going out to cheap restaurants
if there's no food in the shops what makes you think there will be electricity?

If you have an elderly neighbour remember to pop in every now and then to check how they're doing.
Because if they've succumbed to the virus then their larder is likely to be rammed with provisions. In date and free. No need to risk getting infected at the supermarket.

In date??? My mum has stuff in her cupboards that is older than me. I’m 51.

Well I maybe foolish, but I booked a Caribbean cruise today, got a real bargain! I go mid April, if the situation gets worse, they’ll cancel the cruise and I’ll get my money back. I’m healthy (touch wood), can’t spend all the time worrying what if.

That assumes that

a) you know that every case has been reported
b) every death has been correctly attributed and
c) the percentage of deaths due to health implications is known statistically.

None of that is known for certain. The statistical band of 0.5% to 4% was used by the BBC.

The World Health Organisation stat is 3.4%

The BBC have become pretty worthless at anything lately, sadly

3.4% of every RECORDED case. Do you really think every single case has been recorded and reported to the WHO in places like China and Iran? And for that matter every death?

The WHO are guessing, which is why the BBC are quoting standard statisticians margins' of error.

The supermarket supply chain consists of hundreds of thousands of people and the goods can be panic brought - the electricity supply chain consists of way way fewer people and can't be panic brought. I'd suggest that we're unlikely to see power cuts.

Indeed. We can only hope that the death rate is very much as the low end of estimates for the reason you state.

Regardless, as we now seem to be entering the phase of this virus being spread from person to person, I can't fathom how anyone can not be concerned about the impact of this on the health system, healthcare professionals and those that need to call upon them in coming weeks and months.

Italy's first case was after ours, but they entered the phase of the virus passing freely before we did. We seem to have got slightly lucky on this count - the virus spreading has got off to a slow start here, but the hare seems to be very much on the move now.

Again, this assumes that Italy's health system and values are the same as ours. They aren't.

Don't overreact..... I was confidently told that Ladders and Bee stings cause more fatalities only a little while ago.

Correct - but maybe they’re now wrong? Anyway, my point was a broader one about messing with the environment or even how we’ve divorced ourselves from it, believing we’ve advanced to a state where we control it. Then Mother Nature reminds us who really is boss! That’s all :)

Went to my local Tesco today. All hand sanitiser gone, all Detox and anti bac kitchen stuff gone, plenty of pasta. Not a lot of loo roll but sticking sticking it on offer at the front of the store is a bit of piss take.

Most of the world uses their hand and washes it after. Then there’s the Daily Mail, although not the online edition - you’ll ruin your smart phone!

I know it would bring the country to its knees but why not of stopped all travel surely that was going to be the best way to contain it . Surely it’s too late for that now .

Because the country needs to be working to address the epidemic. Banning flights from infected areas would have made sense but wouldn’t guarantee keeping it out. If Italy is anything to go by, it’s been there since the early days but no one realised in was corvid19 hence the lack of action. It also appears that in its mild form people just don’t realise.

We need food in shops, water, electricity, rubbish collection etc simply locking down the country for a period an extended period of time just isnt feasible or helpful.

Can I suggest that everyone goes to the WHO website (who.int) and read the situation reports as they are very informative and have latest info available. I suspect that much of the angst that people are experiencing will be to a certain extent elevated, the tabloids will hate it. The latest report is no. 44.

60% of transmission of virus transmission in South Korea is now community spread meaning the virus is endemic in that country. South Korea has performed over 100,000 tests, has text alerts to alert local populations of infected individuals and the places they visited, has a mask wearing and hygiene conscious culture and has an excellent health service. They are leading virtually all other countries on how they have attempted to handle this and yet are going under. Anyone who thinks the UK will handle this better is optimistic in my opinion.
As it stands at the moment this is a virus that is easily spread and causes significant health issues for a significant percentage of the population. It is likely that hospitals in this country will be overwhelmed.

In my opinion the authorities are (deliberately) under playing how serious this will be (and have been for some time). I hope I am wrong.

SK is a weird one as it got its foot hold in a cult which appears to be a closed community. Of the 4000 cases 60% were cult members. There 230,000 members of which 9,000 are showing systems. That is not something we are likely to see elsewhere.

What is the sense in panicking though? Even if the reapers here with a vengeance? All gotta die someday. Why spend the last few days getting in a lather about whether some of us (and I include myself) ain’t going to make it through? Seriously, in times of crisis as this might be heading, what’s the best thing to do? Absolutely losing your shit and sustaining fear by constantly discussing and perpetuating what might happen isn’t going to help a jot. Where’s following advice and remaining calm at least maintains a sense of stoicism and order. I’m at an age now where I’ve seen death, faced death and know it’s coming one day quite possibly soon as I’m not in the best of health myself. You might say I’m resigned to my fate! Our fate!! But really, I do think people need to get a sense of proportion. If you do that, you’ll probably be able to take comfort from the fact that we ain’t ALL going to die from it. Just some. And that’s the case with everything from cancer to ‘falling off ladders’ and ‘bee stings’ which take their toll too.

I'm able to confirm that all shelves are fully stocked and shopping behaviour is normal in Tesco superstore Church Road.

Maybe it's just a Sainsbury's thing.
ASDA(S) in Ystalyfera has everything except hand sanitiser gel and spring onions.
