Well I dont know who to believe now Boris or this "fact" that I just saw on a twitter feed.

On the 30th May the postive test rate was 0.65% based on 496068 tests and 3240 cases. Today it was 0.71% based on 1084406 tests and 7742 cases, if that is in anyway correct we are being played big time. The more you test the more you find.

And no I am not a Trump supporter :)

Check your sources.

I'm due to be getting married in just under four weeks.

I'm awaiting an email from our venue to confirm exactly what they can accomodate under the new rules, but the continued requirement for social distancing very much makes me think that we at least are in no different position now than we were prior to yesterday's announcement.
As expected, yesterday makes no difference for us.

30 at the reception, 4 guests plus the photographer for the ceremony.

Gutted, but not surprised.

Bad news: Hospitalisations now escalating, although this was entirely expected given the recent spike (note: new word) in cases. 7-day average now up to 152 from 102 a short while ago.

Good news: Cases rise week-on-week again, but growth continuing to show signs of levelling off. 7-day average case growth now at 39%, down from 66% less than a week ago.

You can't select two random days - the testing numbers are all over the place with a range from 500k/day to well over a million - data from 1/5 onwards as an example

In my book that's more good news than bad, cases are usually higher on a Tuesday than Monday. The recent weather must be helping, in the couple of weeks a lot of socialising has been outdoors.

Indeed. Without wishing to sound callous - there's an element of illness and rising deaths "baked in" now - there's little we can do about that over the next 2-4 weeks.

Seeing the rise of cases lose some momentum is excellent news because, whether you care about case statistics or not, we know they do feed into everything else.

As Oliver Johnson highlights, there's still a very close correlation, currently, between cases and hospitalisations...

So we're back to they were going to die anyway narrative - nice! I really thought we had got past that...

As for Bolton, everything including the kitchen sink has been thrown at that area to improve things, however some areas still aren't fairing so well, like Blackburn with Darwen!

Let's see what the data says in a couple of weeks time before we start making proclamations in either direction.

No, of course we "haven't got past that ". Obviously we need to know what state of health the deceased were in, to make a proportionate response. If we find that the dead consist almost entirely of people aged over 100, people with terminal illness, and people who have made an informed choice not to have the vaccine, then the steps we take to stop it will be different from if the virus is killing at random.

Incidentally, I have looked at Blackburn with Darwen. 9 deaths in May and June. It doesn't seem so much worse than Bolton's 10. The number in hospital is 30 at the last count, but of course that is not just Blackburn, it also includes Accrington, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale too. That's close to a million people, of whom 30 are in hospital.

You are twisting things now with that scenario, those dying are not all over 100 and terminally ill, besides which even if they were, why should they be confined to death by something kindly "given" to them by someone else.

Your earlier post seemed to indicate Bolton had things under control, so everything is OK, whereas I was pointing out that it was under control BECAUSE of what had been thrown at it, whereas in Blackburn cases are rising rapidly.

I hope you are right and that the rise in cases doesn't translate into extra pressure on the NHS, long Covid for the younger people who are generally now the victims and a rise in unnecessary deaths.

Clearly you are prepared to gamble people's health for the sake of a few more weeks of limited restrictions - me, I think this is probably about the first sensible and timely thing this government has done during this whole sorry saga.

Oh, and also referring back to your previous post - this is NOT a lockdown. If you really think so go out and see for yourself, saving for the limited restrictions being kept in place things looked pretty normal on Hastings Seafront yesterday...!

Go out and enjoy the sunshine and stop railing against an enemy you will never beat.

Shambolic.

The industry has spent 10’s millions installing Perspex screens on the advice of the Government.

Ministers are now being briefed that they did more harm than good, as it prevented airflow.

I’ll file that with the 10pm curfew rule/clueless.

If true, I can see a lot of legal action taking place

Sorry to hear that.

On the plus side you have more than 30 people you can call family and friends. That's hugely more than me!

Don’t really have an issue with that, certain jobs require jabs.

Radio 5 phone on about this now.

A care home owner was complaining that because a significnt number of his staff refuse to be vaccinated 'for whatever reason, some think it can actually give them covid' he will lose staff if they are required to vaccinate, and then.....

I think the same thing was said about allowing black doctors and nurses to work in the NHS in the 70s. Some patients refuse to be treated by them 'for whatever reason' so they would end up untreated and.....

The problem for me is that this surely had to be made law a year ago. Or six months ago. With some provision, perhaps, for the poor care home owners who would lose staff because a proportion of their staff may refuse a jab. The care home sector is a racket. That was obvious a year ago. But HMG have done apparently nothing about it. And now, at the eleventh hour, they are forcing staff to be jabbed, staff on minimum wage who would rather take on a different minimum wage job tha get a jab, according to some care home owners, apparently.
