I think inevitably really, really high cases numbers, no matter that the double vaccine is highly effective will inevitably lead to some hospitalisations. A small proportion of a really hugh number will still be quite a big number.

Trouble is there you are working with "I think", whereas the government have to work with something more concrete - like carefully gathered data.

It is the need for this data collection and analysis that should result in a delay to the June 21st relaxation - and not scaremongering by scientists with a name to make for themselves!

Absolutely this, June 21 is too soon for us to fully understand the impact of this current increase in cases. At the very least a couple more weeks will help greatly in processing the new information. As much as I'd like us to finally lift restrictions, the case for waiting a short while longer is very compelling in my view and a bit of a no brainer.

While we are largely singing from the same hymn sheet regarding delaying June 21st relaxation, I can’t see how you can set a target for case numbers. Case numbers are largely meaningless unless they equate to a certain percentage of hospitalisations and deaths.

As an extreme example (while unlikely), you could have a million cases, with 10 hospitalisations and 1 death, the cases in this example would look disastrous, but wouldn’t be backed up by the seriousness. That is the key and the bit the government are currently struggling with due to lack of meaningful data.

Delay the date, go for a % of fully protected, while at the same time collecting the data to prove and convince!

You have not taken in to consideration a lot of people who got mild symptoms get long covid that goes on for months . I don`t know the numbers but i think it is minimum 500,000 i have seen somewhere . It can be from the age of 35 upwards so its not just old people .

Cor, damned if I do, damned if I don't...

Personally I would like to see us wait until all adults have had their second jab, plus 3 weeks, but that will probably not happen until October, so, like the government look for sensible, achievable second best options...

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday warned that COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations are "very clearly" on the rise in the country and that he continues to assess the vaccination data to decide on whether to end all lockdown measures by June 21.

Speaking in Cornwall ahead of the G7 Leaders' Summit, Johnson told reporters that arguments continue to be made "one way or another" as to whether all restrictions can be lifted as planned.

Interesting to see what effect this has.

 would hope hospitals would do this in the first place, should only get merged together in the reporting.

The Indian variant is in 50 odd countries, including Denmark, Israel and USA who dont Seem to be having much issue - I’m interested to know why we are

Because of our ties with India, a well-established Indian/British community, some of who move quite fluidly between the two countries.

This caused a relatively high number of Delta "seeds" to be sown in small geographic areas where there are a lot of multi-generational households and high levels of vaccine hesitancy.

In short - all of the ingredients to encourage for viral spread.

Other countries will catch up and, in the US, it could be quite devastating when it does.

Found in numerous states 2 months ago and is only 6 percent of cases today.

New York have lifted last chunks of restrictions around the same time - California has more space, New York doesnt

Is it the vaccination rate?

Edit - Indian was added to red list on the 19th April (23rd it came it)

USA 30th April (4th May it came in) - https://www.reuters.com/world/us/ex...el-us-india-limit-covid-19-spread-2021-04-30/

Yeah, I know all that.

I still maintain it was a fewer concentration of seeds so the exponential drive just took longer to get going. I can't see any reason it won't become dominant there now it's cranking into gear, as it will elsewhere too.
