Are they ‘following the science’ or not?

https://www.theguardian.com/educati...ol-reopening-plan-recommended-by-sage-experts

“The papers revealed that a low-risk scenario where pupils in England would attend school on alternating weeks was presented to the government as the most likely way to gain popular support, before ministers instead settled on their plan for a widespread reopening on 1 June.

The government’s plan for reopening schools to entire classes of reception, year 1 and year 6 pupils on 1 June was not among the nine scenarios modelled for Sage by the Department for Education. But one of the scientists’ preferred options of splitting classes and having pupils rotate between alternate weeks in school, which they said had “particular potential merit”, was passed over.”

They were going to follow the science but then they realised alternate weeks wouldn't get parents back to work
In fairness neither will the plan in it's current form

Interesting comment made by a panelist on a chat show tonight. He said that a while ago he was chatting with someone and they said that the melting glaciers are releasing pathogens that have never before been encountered by mankind and as we approach the tipping point this could happen again. The panelist said he would normally dismiss this as a conspiracy theory but the other guy was from the Rand Corporation which is a respected think tank. I suppose something could lay dormant for thousands of years encased in ice and then be released - but it does sound a bit like a Hammer Horror movie

someone from Rand is supposed to do blue sky thinking, they may be prone to odd flight of fancy. this idea needs a virus to be airborne to end up in atmosphere, caught in snow and land in a glacier, then survive to come out the other side. it also then requires virus to be harmfull to humans, or mutate to be so. its possible but doesnt actually change much.

Some fascinating results, if you can't read them here are some of the key ones;

Q1 - ARE YOU BETTER OR WORSE OFF AS A RESULT OF LOCKDOWN?
Better off - 33%
No change - 37%
Worse off - 29%

Q3 - HAVE YOU ENJOYED BEING AT HOME MORE?
Yes - 43%
No - 25%
Don't know - 31%

Q4 - IS THE LOCKDOWN BEING EASED TOO FAST OR TOO SLOW?
Too fast - 53%
About right - 20%
Too slow - 11%
Don't know - 6%

Q5 suggests the public do not want any of cafes / restaurants / pubs (even with outdoor seating), clothes shops or schools to open. Q7 is extremely difficult for Dominic Cummings. Q10 suggests overall people support the teaching unions refusing to return to work if their members do not feel safe (although not Tory voters).

It is conceivable that pathogens we have seen before are frozen in ice, but they would have had to have been put their by our ancestors in close proximity. Or a bat or pangolin, obviously. I hear the frozen arctic and antarctic wastes used to be awash with them, closely followed by our ancestors waving their woks in eager anticipation.

This just backs up the "Furlough fever" comment by some.....

It is a massive shame that the govt did not follow that advice. It would have been received much better by schools and parents.

Yep, you have to have the parents and school staff on board. All the government has done is slow the return process down unintentionally.

I think that somewhere, a friend of a friend of the panellist on the chat show saw The Thing ( 1982 ) on telly and that sparked a " bloke down the pub …." story.

I have no idea if this has been mentioned on this thread or any other. My son works for Greene King and he has been told that they are getting ready to open all of their pubs on July 4th. This seems a bit early to me. I did read an article that someone put up about no drinking at the bar but I would go a step further and bring out an app, like Wetherspoons (spit) already have where you order from it. No need for anyone to congregate around the bar then.

Quite surprised by this, I was expecting more cases and fatalities in West Sussex, due to quite an ageing population.

Looks like UK now has same death per capita as Italy, never thought it would have come to this...

Genuine question - how can it be that there are still hundreds of deaths every day if the peak was so long ago? Personally, I don't believe the numbers being reported. I don't know why they would be overreported in such a significant way, maybe someone can enlighten me why it would be? Are there really so many people still dying of this virus?

Plenty of stories like this doing the rounds. I’d love to know if there any truth to them.

the peak is a statistical presentation, it doesnt mean the virus stopped. the infection is reducing but still occuring, some of those cases will be severe and some lead to mortality. and many (most?) will die from other illness while having covid, and some of them will be incorrectly diagnosed with covid.
