The masks being used in the ITU dept where my wife works are single use. They are the ones that look like a welders mask and you may have seen them on news reports. Patients probably aren't wearing them because, when they can, they are lying face down.

Face down? Does that help to clear their lungs or summat?

Heard it the other day on video by a doctor teaching the breathing technique and the missus confirmed it.. More of the gaseous exchange takes place at the back of the lungs rather than the front. The inflamation of the lungs caused by the virus fills them with some fluid so by being prone, this settles at the front, ergo the theory is you can get more oxygen into the blood at the back.

Just thought it worth commenting here on the main thread that if you want to see all the trends, presented in the best possible ways, the source (that is being used by the BBC, albeit badly and with their own added errors) is here:

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases

You can scope around and look at all sorts of stuff.

To add, also, the daily cases per deaths calculation I have been making using the BBC (JH) data has been updated for today (no need to post it) and shows all those widely different rates of death per infection are staying rock solid over time within countries (25 cases per death in the US, 8 in the UK, for example) so, for the moment, the biggest determinant of whether your COVID progresses to your death is apparently the country in which you live. Infection numbers does correlate with death numbers, but on a log-log scale, and everything looks linear on a log log scale.....if this is the same in a week I will be tempted to conclude there is something very odd about this virus - a virus that kills 1 in 8 in the UK, France, Italy, Belgium and Holland, but fewer than 1 in 40 in Germany and 1 in 60 in Japan.

French study finds hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help patients with coronavirus

A drug that’s been touted by President Trump as a “game changer” didn’t help hospitalized patients with coronavirus, and was associated with heart complications, according to a new study.

“This provides evidence that hydroxychloroquine does not apparently treat patients with Covid-19,” said Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Even worse, there were side effects caused by the drug – heart toxicities that required it be discontinued.”

The study was published Tuesday on a pre-print server and was not peer reviewed.

In the study, among the 84 patients who took hydroxychloroquine, 20.2% were admitted to the ICU or died within seven days of inclusion. Among the 97 patients who did not take the drug, 22.1% went to the ICU or died.

The difference was determined to not be statistically significant.

Looking just at deaths, 2.8% of the patients who took hydroxychloroquine died, and 4.6% of the patients who did not take it died. That difference was also found to not be statistically significant.

Seems strange that we are told that washing our hands with soap for 20 seconds inactivates the virus, but we can't clean the full-face masks. I understand if acetate-based would be clouded by solvents but I would have thought that cleaning and sterilisation should be possible

And if the answer is that they really can't be cleaned then why not make them from a material that can be? I expect this could make them more expensive, but this overall cost would soon be overtaken by the much smaller numbers required. And if you can do that to the visors then why not the gowns and gloves too? If soap kills CV19 then just wash in a large soapy vat and hang or blow to dry.

Trump just bombed the WHO. Has halted funding from US. Seems he's more worried about "fake news" and an antagonistic press than stark facts? By definition the WHO has a global view rather than US-centric. I'm not saying WHO are beyond reproach but if he has hard facts that the organisation has not behaved properly should state them.

... making Bill Gates the biggest funder of the WHO. From the vaccines being in development, I have a feeling we'll go with his.

Im going to be a gentleman on this and place myself last in the vaccine queue.

People think the WHO is funded purely by governments, but a lot comes from private individuals and big companies, some of them pharmaceutical. Not hard to see a few vested interests amongst the donors.

because Gates is knocking up a vaccine in his personal biology lab? are you a subscriber to the idea this virus is intended to bring about some form of coercion to accept a vaccine for an alternative motive?

Yup. Luckily though, the generally disliked 0,00001% are only considered evil or greedy in all other aspects. When they make vaccines or other medications, they are heroes that can not be questioned. The pharmaceutical companies wants ut to be healthy, they are our friends.

Source: the scientists they fund, the newspapers they own, and the public listening to the scientists and newspapers they own.

I am a subscriber to the idea that the virus is random but a great opportunity for the elite to inject us with whatever the **** they feel like.

But I think you already know that I have a significantly lower trust in the global oligarcy than most. And yes I know its a unacceptable standpoint but what can I say... I have a problem with authorities.
