And nearly 10000 new cases, blimey.

It's just relentlessly grim for Italy and Spain isn't it. Jesus. Poor ********.

More indicative of increased testing rates than infection rates I would assume.

This is the part still bothering me here, we need mass testing ASAP if we can even think about any form of relaxation of the current restrictions.

It will be our turn soon.

We’re nowhere near the rates of increase of either of those countries at the same stage, and we locked down 4 days earlier than Italy’s equivalent day.

It’s not going to be fun, but it looks unlikely we are on the same trajectory as either country.

I really hope you are right.

The data on this page are very illustrative. The animation half way down the page, showing how cases have grown worldwide, and the explosion of cases recently in the US is mind boggling to watch.

However these are all data from modern, structured and fairly open societies (plus Iran)....

The lack of any data from Russia is concerning, and the truth of what's happening there is . . . interesting . . . .I cannot imagine they have managed social isolation better than the US, so people there are going to really notice, soon, that Putin has been lying to them. What then? Not exactly famous for social restraint, the Russians.

There are also no data for India, Brazil, anywhere in Africa....lucky they all have a brilliant UK-style national health services and cohesive social infrastructure, and a well educated modern outward-looking, non-superstitious population capable of the social organization necessary for nipping the pandemic in the bud.

10 days or so ago we were tracking Italy almost exactly in terms of the daily increase. We've done nothing like that in the last few days which is at least a bit encouraging. It's too early to say we won't, but we're not currently on quite the same trajectory. This is lost on a lot of the graphs that are published due to the use of logarithmic rather than linear scales (and lots of argument by people much cleverer than me which is best to use). The comparison with the normal rate of deaths (and deaths from respiratory issues) is fascinating - just hope it doesn't reawaken the 'it's only flu, innit' debate. This site is excellent for being able to simply switch between protocols, highlight certain countries etc re the overall statistics

Sounds like they added the deaths at home "backlog" in one go.

I hope that’s true, but that would also be a bit of a misrepresentation of “the last 24 hours”. This was always inevitable, as is the fact it will get worse before it gets better.

Hopeful we won’t see days as high as Italy’s 850-900+ days.
