Coronavirus / Covid-19

I’ve moved past astonishment to full on dismay at the sheer stupidity of members of the public.

- Why are people still walking around socialising?
- Why are people moaning about their holidays?
- Why are people not wearing gloves like, all the time outside?
- Why when I went to the shops earlier did i see a middle aged woman having a natter with her mate whilst coughing? (Ignoring clear government advice)
- why are people not screaming for more tests?

Some of the above behaviour I’ve observed demonstrated on this very thread.

On a plus side the “you doom monger it’s just a flu mate” idiots have gone. But possibly they are now on the list above.

Maybe they are the master race after all?!

They have 30-35 ICU spots per 100k people, best in Europe. So they are a lot more prepared for this. I mean if Imperial Colleges estimates of 200-250 ICU places per 100k during peak is true, I think Germany could be one of the very, very few countries who could cope with that. Good for them.

Agree

Will not bore again but having a wife this very much could be serious to, I look in disbelief and unfortunately those that will not conform will be taken off the streets. things are moving on.

That is because if under 60 you have a 1% chance of dying from it and sadly a lot of people will think, I will be fine fck everyone else and still go out and not let their life be impacted. There are quite a few people like that in the uk

Don’t know if this has been posted but if you want to hear a straight-talking, articulate epidemiology expert talking about Covid-19 then you may wish to watch this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3URhJx0NSw

I found it to be highly informative and quite fascinating. Interestingly, he debunks the suggestion that it just affects older/sicker people.

It runs for 90 mins and covers Covid-19 and other infectious diseases. If you want to scroll through the non Covid bits here’s a timeline.

00:10 Intro
0:40 How bad is Coronavirus
4:00 Is the virus an "old persons" disease
5:18 Incubation period
7:50 What can be done to prevent infection
13:45 Drug shortages
15:20 Sauna use effect on infections
18:00 Was Coronavirus man-made
22:00 American Wild Deer diseases and Prions
32:00 Is Corona seasonal
35:00 Corona could be 10 times worse than the flu
35:25 Corona will stay around for months
36:10 Coronavirus vs Spanish flu
38:30 How can we prepare our immune system
43:20 Do hand sanitizers and masks work
50:00 We stockpile weapons more than medical goods
54:30 Will people panic if they are told the truth
56:00 Vaccines
1:02:00 Why a virus would originate from China
1:11:30 What to do if you get the flu
1:15:45 Lime disease and ticks
1:23:00 Effects of fire suppression on ecosystem
1:30:00 Vaccine for Coronavirus

Michael Osterholm is an internationally recognized expert in infectious disease epidemiology. He is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota. I think that interview is in chunks on YouTube too. Very interesting... scary yes, but also there´s a sense of optimism too.

Decided not to listen to government advice or 111, because there are those on NSC who turn out to be microbiologists, national economical experts, housing advisors, mortgage gurus, GP’s and national pandemic specialists .... who’d have thought that only a week ago they were experts in slagging off Potterball ... goes to show, never judge a book by its cover!!

How is the local supermarket out of basically everything?

Ok, so people have panic bought toilet roles, pasta and rice. And all the cereal. But how come all the fresh produce has gone too? People can't store it all, so what's happened?

I fear a lot of panic bought food will be wasted

Are we now the only major country not to have closed it’s borders?

So EU countries had individual powers to limit entry through their borders all along....... who’d have thought that.

Thanks for linking to that - I'd have missed it otherwise. A really interesting read (just search for thisisbillgates on the page and jump from one answer to the next to make sure you see all he says, and miss all the guff in between.

This is the one bit I copied and pasted for those who can't be arsed to click...

Q: How long will this go on?

A: This will vary a lot by country. China is seeing very few cases now because their testing and "shut down" was very effective. If a country does a good job with testing and "shut down" then within 6-10 weeks they should see very few cases and be able to open back up.

Q: Won't a rebound happen after the shutdown ends?

A: It depends on how you deal with people coming in from other countries and how strong the testing effort was. So far in China the amount of rebound being seen is very low. They are controlling people coming into the country very tightly. Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore have all done a good job on this. If we do it right the rebounds should be fairly small in numbers.

Isn't it funny that when shit comes to shove it turns out these high flyer wankers in offices mean nothing and it's the NHS staff, carers, delivery drivers, teachers, cleaners, supermarket workers whose jobs actually matter!

Exactly the same here in Findon Valley, as I posted on the Panic Buying thread.

I had previously taken heart in all the veg being available in abundance, figuring that it was too much effort for the panic-buyers to cook from scratch. I guess with freezers selling out everywhere too, there could be some people batch cooking and freezing.
