If/when spread is truly rampant, then my guess is they'll want to choke off the spread as much as they can.

We may watch football outside, but we travel on heaving trains and buses. We congregate in packed concourses. We take a piss with five blokes breathing down the back of our necks waiting their turn. It is these environments, with poor air circulation, that spreading is far more likely to occur.

Look, this is just my guess, but I'm not picking up any mixed messaging at all - it's just a matter of timing.

Like everyone else, I'll just follow expert advice as and when we receive it.

All extremely good points to be fair. You'd think the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the whole country would have considered them. I don't disagree with what you've posted but people will read that BBC link and think any event cancellation is OTT. No wonder people are worried and confused.

According to a scientist on R5L this morning there is now “tension” between the scientific community who are recommending taking preventive action now and the government who want to defer for time being.

He reckoned that the scientists are biting their tongues for now to present a united front but that if no action is being taken by the end of the week that they will start to break rank.

It seems that the gov’t are more concerned with £ than the population.

Tories? Putting the population in danger to please their business chums?

Pull the other one.

I think youre right, the economy is the elephant in the room.

But to an extent, don’t you feel it’s still in our hands whether it gets out or control or not? If the infections get into the thousands in the UK, we go into social distancing and slowly choke the virus out.

50/50 as to whether it is in our hands. Italy thought they had it in their hands, now they have 9000+ and people who need serious medical attention can't get it. Very worrying, but no need to panic.

Better make the most of Saturday’s game then, could be last home game we see this season?

I'm certainly expecting it to be.

And, frankly, having digested some of the horrifying tales continuing to come out of Northern Italy, I'm not entirely sure I'll go on Saturday myself.

I stress, again, this wouldn't be for my own health concerns, but more that the more people that get this, the quicker it will spread very quickly: https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/09...-likely-not-infectious-after-recovery-begins/

Now I'm no friend of this government, but there is also a public health risk in the event of severe economic turmoil. Job losses, recession etc. could all lead to their own problems, and potentially deaths that otherwise might not have happened. I agree money shouldn't define our actions, but there are side effects to simply closing the country down, even for days let alone weeks.

Hopefully not.

It hasn't gone unnoticed (by me anyway) that Boris got down to Twickenham last Saturday so if it was safe for him, then I believe that all grounds should remain open for those that want to attend.

It really is a double edged sword. Put measures in place that will do most to stop the virus and you damage the economy. Damage the economy and you lose jobs etc.. Alternatively you hold back until necessary and the virus continues to spread, the people/economy take a hit but hopefully it is short term.

Boris or Jezza do not want this virus, but it is here. How you mitigate the effect to the enth degree is the unknown.

Really not worth politicising the issue.

So 500,000 die in the UK every year apparently. What increase on this number would people consider to be a disaster?

100? (0.02%)
1,000? (0.2%)
10,000? (2%)
20,000? (4%)

I've seen people quoting 100,000 deaths from this. How?

China have only had 3,000 deaths and it is now going up in the 20s per day. So in a country of that size they are no where near this level.

massive budget tomorrow. for all sorts of reasons need some guarantees for lower paid, lower skills employees who will feel forced to work (for economic reasons).
