I have a feeling the inept and rudderless US government may be about to start taking things seriously...

Multiple republican congressman are in isolation after coming into 'sustained contact' with a CPAC (right wing annual conference) attendee tested positive for the virus. Interestingly, one of those having to self isolate is the congressman who wore a full gas mask on the floor in a mocking stunt during a vote to authorize funds for fighting the epidemic last week. That same congressman traveled on Air Force 1 with Trump just this afternoon...

Another sensible approach to the problem.

Unfortunately not many will read it, preferring instead to wallow in panic and speculation.

Can we really trust The Daily Boris though? After all he's not very good with facts and figures at the best of times.
I read the article and it does nothing to allay most people's fears, juggling " Known knowns and Unknown knowns " with random uncertainties while sounding like a teacher talking down to a 4 year old who has just had a nightmare on his first night in boarding school.

There are lots of real fears out in the open this time around and this disease, when it comes, will swamp our medical system and severely affect our way of life.

One thing is for sure - anyone ( who is now healthy ) who gets some sensible supplies in, locks the door and lives like a hermit, will be ok. I bet some are already doing it.

Only an absolute arse would try and make political capital out of this impending disaster.

I struggle to believe many countries, if any at all, have the kind of capacity required sitting idle in case something like this happened.

Time will tell on all counts...

Talking of absolute arses.....

Farrage was on the radio this morning, attacking the government for not introducing quarantine for people arriving from (I think he mentioned Italy) with threats about what will happen if people in this country catch coronavirus 'as a consequence'. It was classic Farrage - if anything happens in this country that we can blame on politicians for failing to be stern with foreigners, there will be civil unrest. And people wonder how a student from Singapore can be punched in the face in Oxford street by a couple of gammon chavs

All the while we are 'advised' to not travel, but cannot cancel travel without losing our money we have instability. Once the death toll starts to rise the government will need to be more decisive.

I have to travel to work in London shortly and as a 61 year old who had had an incipient respiratory infection for more than 3 months, I'm getting a bit worried.

I managed to pick up a bug on Sunday, obviously not The One, but a shivering one, had to put on loads of clothes, covered myself with 2 duvets and had a hot water bottle. I burnt it out of my system by about 11 Sunday night but felt pretty tired so warned my boss I would not make Monday but would be fine after one day of recovery.... Despite me saying it was a shivering bug NOT a fever he insisted I phoned 111 ( waste of time as I would just be clogging the system unnecessarily) to make sure it was not Covid, of course the system was swamped so I did it online to be told " see a doctor if your symptoms reappear within 5 days " However, boss has bricked it and told me to take today off too just to be sure.... And, he's going to pay me sick pay for both days..... Unheard of!

Anyway, had no contact with anyone other than Mrs V for 48 hours and that has been quite nice. I have books, Netflix and the Internet so I will cope quite happily if it comes to it.... But, when Mrs V runs out of fags.....

Is he likewise insisting UK citizens don’t leave the country? We are surely fast becoming a filthy cauldron of infection too that foreigners would wish to avoid contact with at all costs.

So 500,000 die in the UK every year apparently. What increase on this number would people consider to be a disaster?

100? (0.02%)
1,000? (0.2%)
10,000? (2%)
20,000? (4%)

The government are planning for an actual disaster. I would say their maximum number of 100,000 deaths (20% increase) would qualify as a disaster.

Whilst China will probably end up with less than 5,000 dead judging by the control they are now getting over the spread of the virus, however, you could argue that they’ve had a disaster in terms of their economic position and reputation.

I’d be very surprised if the infection rate takes off in this Country like it has in Italy but the government failing to screen airline passengers from Northern Italy since they had their big spike has to be a reason why our figures are going up so much. I think Boris thought that we’re all going to get it anyway so why bother preventing it get into this Country?

I will hope to get to both the Liverpool and Man City games in at the Amex.
Never seen a game there yet, last time I was back it was under construction and the security guy let me in for a couple of sneaky photos when I explained I was flying back in a couple of days.
Shame I won't be seeing any winnable games !

Yeah I am going to Man U and hopefully Liverpool too.

Can't see us picking up any points in those two.

There needs to be a level of financial support for those who are more vulnerable such as yourself. After all, you are doing the government and NHS a favour if you reduce your risk of catching this to a neglible level by self isolating. Travelling on cramped public transport, going to cinemas, theatres, gigs and restaurants are all probable major risks of infection.

I'm already considering changing my shopping habits and going ridiculously early or late to a 24 hour supermarket to avoid crowds.
Good luck HWT.

He was also on Newsnight, despite having been in Brussels mixing with people who are now self isolating. Why do the BBC persist in interviewing him? He’s not a doctor, an MP, an MEP, nor even a leader of a political party anymore.

Without wishing to score points in any shape or form, bollocksy or otherwise, Bozza, what I genuinely don't get is the mixed messages. On the one hand, we're encouraged by the media to believe that northern Italy has become some form of deadly plague pit. On the the other hand, Easyjet are quite happily running half a dozen flights a day - in both directions - between Gatwick and Milan. What gives?

Malta has 4 cases and has banned all travel to Italy and Sicily.

A friend of mine is going to the Liverpool game on 21st and has been told to work from home for 2 weeks when she returns to Malta.
We are flying in on the 14th for the Arsenal game if we are allowed !

I hope that when this is finally behind us, the Chinese leadership actually take some responsibility for this global health and economic disaster. Instead of spending billions of Yen on vanity projects they’d be better off implementing some basic health and hygiene standards that outlaw these medieval ‘wet markets.’

I watched a programme about wet markets the other evening.

Horrific. I had no idea such places existed:nono::(
