transfermarkt’s valuations aren’t great, but they still offer a decent baseline for player valuations.According to them....Southampton's rock bottom of the league, relegated squad has a higher transfer value than ours. That says everything you need to know about that website.
Yes, Southampton’s squad is more valuable at the moment according to transfermarkt than ours (even though this is definitely not the case) for two reasons:
1) transfermarkt has yet to complete their end of season update for the premier league in terms of valuing players
2) transfermarkt doesn’t take form into account as much as it should.
transfermarkt values Enciso at 11m, Ferguson at 10m, Buonnotte at 9m. These players are all significantly underrated by transfermarkt, largely because the last update to player valuations was in March. When the next update release, it’s likely that all these players values will go up to a more reasonable number, but still perhaps not one, we as fans would deem fair.
I feel like another perfect example here of transfermarkt’s flaws in Tariq Lamptey. At his peak, transfermarkt valued him at 18m, and he’s currently valued at 15m. IMO, at his peak, he was worth much more than 18m, but currently, we would struggle getting 15m for him.
In time, valuations will make more sense. I feel like transfermarkt’s valuations are very good at comparing players at the exact same age. For example, it provides a good sense of our teenage prospects in relation to other teenagers in the world. But as a whole, transfermarkt underrates young players, in part fearing that there valuaes are quite unstable and could crash (or soar) given only a few good (or poor) performances
