Newcastle will hold a minute's silence ahead of the Uefa Cup clash with Real Mallorca as a mark of respect to the victims of the bombings in Madrid.

The game has been given the go-ahead by Uefa despite calls from the four Spanish clubs involved in the competition for their ties to be postponed.

A club spokesman said: "We feel it is appropriate to register their sincere condolences to the Spanish people following the terrible events which unfolded in Madrid this morning.

"Despite requests for a postponement from all four Spanish clubs who will play this evening, Uefa have told both Newcastle and Real Mallorca that the games must go ahead as planned.

"Newcastle are supportive of the collective request of the four Spanish clubs and share the deep feelings of grief being suffered by the people of Spain.

"As a mark of respect, we will hold a minute's silence before the match this evening."

Well done to the lovely people at UEFA for forcing the teams to play during a period of national mourning. Nice.

I hope it's observed with respect.

Celtic and Barcelona will be interesting. There are always one or two Basque flags at Parkhead and there is no love lost between the Catalans and the Madrilenos. Having said that I think the scale of this is so big, I would sincerely hope that even the IRA-supporting half-wits in the Celtic end (and there are a lot of them) will show some respect here.

It reminds me of September 11 - UEFA (and the FA for that matter)took 24 hours to accept that something big had gone on and that football should take second place. They've done exactly the same again here.

Whereas the domestic programme was called off in a flash when Princess Diana died. It just shows the different values that we place on different people's lives in our society, and it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

RIP to all those who lost their lives today, and deepest sympathy to all those who lost friends and family.

Although the Queen Mother's death wasn't announced til AFTER the football had finished. Still don't know who won the Liverpool game that day...

The Queen mother's death was announced once Prince Charles had been contacted as he was skiing at the time - it was nothing to with football match times :dunce:

Not quite a minute long but brilliantly observed.

Newcastle players wearing black armbands too...

Mallorca wearing different colour armbands as their shirts have black arms.

Are you watching that on telly? I can't find anything but Liverpool vs Marseille.

Newcastle....

still, I would say, the gentlemen and women of the
premiership.

I have nothing but support and praise for our NE
kinspeople.

(and you might note.....Thierry Henry said that the atmosphere
at Pompey and of their fans can only be re-created at
St. James Park..)
