I'd put Madonna in the Gwen Stefani, Kylie Minogue like group of singers.

Entertainers but not all time great singers, potentially put more effort into the choreography than the singing at times which is why Madonna has lip synched in the past.

True greats don't lip synch.

That's why I put the likes of Ann Wilson above them.

Incredible voice, sold records and most importantly capable of an amazing live performance.

Stefani and Minogue aren't even in the same universe as Madonna. Madge was a global cultural pioneering mega star, and whilst vocally may not have been the best, created timeless scene leading pop music through at least 3 decades.

Saw a photo of her yesterday and she looks like Pete Burns.

I think it's a fair claim that she was one of the best singing entertainers, but " Hard to look past..." not that hard.

Each to their own but she has done very well in some decent movies. She has also been terrible in some shocking movies. You know, like every actor.

Have you seen any of those films?

3 words - Body Of Evidence.

A shameless rip-off of Basic Instinct, with Madonna at her slutty best. One of my favourite "it's so bad it's good" movies, second only to Bitter Moon.

As for Madonna, she made great pop hits but - for me - hasn't left a musical impression that has me replaying her albums.

Had an interesting chat in the pub earlier - who is the best of all time. Hard to look past Madonna.

Easy to snark at, and she should've stopped a decade ago, yet she remains one of the most talented and influential pop stars of all time.

Before you type "she can't sing", she absolutely can. She is a phenomenal singer. And she has written and performed some of the most iconic pop songs of all time.

"Take a Bow" in particular is an absolute masterpiece, and if it weren't Madonna (who wrote and sang it - definitively) it would be considered one of the best songs ever produced.

Loved her since she released pappa don't preach. She had an amazing voice.

Edit: I see that numerous people have made that old schoolboy error of comparing her with someone else

OK, I'll have a go. Ahem. Her eyepatch is not as good as Kovarians. ???

When someone starts a thread with 'the greatest' it automatically requires comparisons.

She wrote that aged 13, recorded it at 16. A true genius.

But Madonna is an entertainer, Kate Bush is an artist. I'm not even sure they can be compared.

I believe that the choreography and costumes that accompanied and complimented Kate Bush's videos and live performances was extremely entertaining.

The Catholics would argue that she isn't even the greatest Madonna.

You have a point there, TB

That said.....the comparison is, if I think about it.... inescapably with everybody who isn't Madonna, and I think that question is so absurd, for multiple reasons, it must have blown my tiny mind

The simple answer is, I like her but, no.

Edit: and, yes, I see this is a thread for people to post comments about female artists they like.

There was a big piece in NME in around 1980 that defenestrated Bush for incorporating bits of mime and whatnot into her prancing about, and that anybody trained in that sort of malarkey would find it laughably pretentious (and not of a great standard). So, being a terrible snob at the time, obsessed with authenticity, that put me off her a bit. I quite like her, and have a few bits and bobs, but she doesn't make my top 100 female artists.
